Verse 44 doesn’t appear in my Bible but does in many others, why is this?

And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.

It follows 43 ‘I tell you, then, that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.’ I understand this as being taken from the Jews and given to us Catholics but how does it tie in with verse 44 and why is it missing?

My study NAB has verse 44 in brackets in the main text. In the footnote the reason given is “The majority of textual witnesses omit this verse. It is probably an early addition to Matthew from Luke 20:18, with which it is practically identical.”
