What is the significance and correct interpretation of Matthew 22:12? What action or mindset or sin is Lord Jesus telling us to avoid, that is what does not wearing a wedding garment represent in the parable?

Matthew 22:11-14

[11] And the king went in to see the guests: and he saw there a man who had not on a wedding garment. [12] And he saith to him: Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? But he was silent. [13] Then the king said to the waiters: Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the exterior darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. [14] For many are called, but few are chosen.

This earlier thread on this very question may be insightful.

The wedding garment represents the condition of the person’s soul ( mortal sin or not )

D-R Bible, Haydock Commentary:

Ver. 12. Not having a wedding garment. By this one person, are represented all sinner void of the grace of God. (Witham) — To enter with unclean garments, is to depart out of this life in the guilt of sin. For those are no less guilty of manifesting a contempt for the Deity, who presume to sit down in the filth of an unclean conscience, than those who neglected to answer the invitations of the Almighty. He is said to be silent, because having nothing to advance in his own defence, he remains self-condemned, and is hurried away to torments; the horrors of which words can never express. (St. Chrysostom, hom. lxx)

Every Jewish man who could afford one had a wedding garment around the house, especially since most Jewish men were invited to a lot of weddings of neighbors, friends, and relations. And since most Jewish men had wedding garments, anybody who didn’t have one could usually borrow one. Showing up at a wedding without a wedding garment didn’t show poverty; it showed that you didn’t care enough to rustle one up. (And going to a Jewish wedding, remember, meant that the family was going to feed you and give you drinks and sleeping quarters for several days, while expecting no return but your praying for the bride and groom, eating and drinking heartily, singing and dancing a lot, and showing a happy face. Such a deal!)

So showing up at your prince’s wedding with no wedding garment, and still expecting to get to eat and drink and be merry at his dad’s expense, would be the ultimate disrespect – both personally nasty and publicly unpatriotic.
