“For there shall arise false Christs and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders, insomuch as to deceive (if possible) even the elect.”

So the big questions is, is it possible for the elect to be deceived?

I think this is an interesting question, as we’ve all heard Christians, Catholic or not, say they prayed about something and the Holy Spirit told them such-and-such, when it’s obvious from what’s said that the Holy Spirit did no such thing. The moral here is that any inspiration you have has to be reconciled with an authority, namely the Church. If it contradicts Church teaching, it’s not coming from God.
 
If it were impossible for the elect to be deceived, why would JESUS have instituted the sacrament of confession? History is filled with Christian men, leaders, bishops etc who have been deceived and fallen. Some have returned, but some have perished in their disbelief and deception. ". . . . and lead us not into temptation. . . . "

It is always possible for a person to fall away, because the only requirement for that is free will. But not everything that can be will be. A person who is elected for final salvation will not end up in Hell, because they will choose to do what is right. (Obviously we are unable to know who those people are, unless God grants a special revelation. Not all Christians are elected to final salvation. Some are not, and the eventual falling-away of these people is their own fault.) But they (the elect) could choose to do wrong, God just knows ahead-of-time that they won’t. So it is possible for them to fall away – they just won’t.
