Can someone explain this passage to me? I am new to the Church (only 1.5 years) and I find myself defending my faith quite a bit. While studying Matthew I got to this verse and I can’t seem to grasp what it is saying. “Heaven will pass away?”

I believe heaven in this context means “the heavens”, i.e. the sky and the stars, in other words, the physical universe,

Jesus said " Heaven & earth will pass away but my words will never pass away."

Read- Revelation : 21: 1-10 “then I saw a new heaven & a new earth for the first had passed away.”

Also read - Rev. 19 & 20

Heaven is a place for saved souls. The New Jerusalem will be for saved souls and bodies reunited into complete human beings.
