hi. i’m having a bit of a problem here.

someone said to me that this particular verse does not speak about purgatory but about the 2nd coming

here is what that person said:

"prison in matthew 5:26, according to its footnotes, is the place of discipline. here the Lord is talking about His judgment seat when He comes back. The judge will be the Lord, the officer will be the angel and the prison will be the place of discipline. this actually is a speaking to His believers not to the unbelievers. this place of discipline will be in the 1000 years before the kingdom age

check the recovery version of the bible. it has footnotes that explains 'em. "

Does this explanation completely rule out the notion of purgatory?

thanks and God Bless!

What is 'The recovery version of the Bible? What is the 1000yrs.before the Kingdom age?I’m guessing these are the teachings of the left behind authors.Fiction!

Here is the study note from the Life Application Study Bible on the verses in question.

In Jesus’ day, someone who couldn’t pay a debt was thrown into prison until the debt was paid. Unless someone came to pay the debt for the prisoner, he or she would probably die there. It is practical advice to resolve our differences with our enemies before their anger causes more trouble (Proverbs 25:8-10). You may not get into a disagreement that takes you to court, but even small conflicts mend more easily if you try to make peace right away. In a broader sense, these verses advise us to get things right with our brothers and sisters before we have to stand before God.

@ Wardrandolph - so you mean to say that there is not such explanation in the first place?

@ Agape Thom - i see. no concept of purgatory whatsoever in this particular passage then?

What I’m saying is our Lord refers to Gehenna(Hell)then to Prison.#1.There is no Salvation in Hell.#2.This prison is Purgatory(after a time aperson shall be released). There are other Scriptures that talk of forgiveness in the life to come,Trial by fire,a manswork being burned up but the soul being saved.I believe what the Church teaches:CCC.#1030,1031,1032,1033,1034,1038,1039,1040,1041,1042,1043-1048,1051-1060.I’m not trying to offend anyone.I am Catholic, therefore I believe what the Church Teaches.I honestly have never heard of a Bible called "the Recovery Bible.Being an American Catholic I have and read two Bibles,The DR.and the NAB.Peace,Rocky.

This can be logically thought out by scripture.

Remember that Satan is the ruler of this world. Satan is who mankind serves, sadly enough. When it is talking about prison, it is speaking of those who are in Satans house. Those souls who are lost are in prison and are bound in darkness. However through the work of the holy spirit, those souls in prison may be set free and this is being sanctified by God. To sanctify is to set apart, to seperate. For those lost souls in Prison which is Satans house, remember the bible is written in parable, and the spiritual meaning is about eternal salvation, not anything immediate here on earth.

1000 years.

Now when Christ died on the cross, this was the instant that Satan was dealt a deathblow and was bound for a 1000 years. The 1000 years is not a literal 1000 years, the number 1000 can be understood as the amount of time before something is complete. The 1000 is simply a spiritual number that represents the time it takes to complete something. In this case, when Christ died Satan was bound, and the prison was open. The holy spirit then is able to be poured out, and those who were previously lost, and bound in prison can be set free by Gods grace.

This is proof that Satan was in control until the time Christ was crucified. Hardly any individuals were saved, a handful here and there were recorded in the bible, and this was the actual Christ teaching, Yet when Christ was crucified, Satan was bound, and on Pentecost, Peter is able to preach and 3000 are saved. This is because the holy spirit was poured out, as was Gods promise only because Satan was bound for a 1000 years, which is only in reality a little while, or more specifically, until the Christ is able to set up His chruch and pour the holy spirit out. Sense then Satan has been released as is proved by the verse,

Revelation 13:3
And I saw one of his[Satan] heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.[The deadly wound is the one inflicted when christ was crucified, this was the death blow to Satan]

Revelation 13:12
And he[Satan] exerciseth all the power of the first beast[also Satan] before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

However at the cross Satan was seriously mortally wounded, thus the holy spirit was poured out, thus 3000 are able to be saved, because Satan was bound, because those souls who were locked in his prison were cabable of hearing the word spoken and the holy spirit could penetrate their locked hearts. This is a grace of God.

There’s a Catholic.com feature article (catholic.com/thisrock/1998/9801fea2.asp) called “Purgatory in All but Name” that deals with something like this; it concludes that the “place of discipline” referred to is exactly the same idea as purgatory, except (1) it doesn’t have the same name, and (2) it is fitted into the Protestants’ false “millenial Kingdom” age.

Here’s the relevant paragraph where a Protestant talks about the “place of discipline” in terms that sound exactly like purgatory: “Now, imagine standing before God and seeing all you have lived for reduced to ashes. How do you think you would respond? Picture yourself watching saint after saint rewarded for faithfulness and service to the King—and all the time knowing that you had just as many opportunities but did nothing about them. We cannot conceive of the agony and frustration we would feel if we were to undergo such an ordeal; the realization that our unfaithfulness had cost us eternally would be devastating. And so it will be for many believers. Just as those who are found faithful will rejoice, so those who suffer loss will weep. As some are celebrated for their faithfulness, others will gnash their teeth in frustration over their own shortsightedness and greed. We do not know how long this time of rejoicing and sorrow will last. Those whose works are burned will not weep and gnash their teeth for eternity. At some point we know God will comfort those who have suffered loss (see Rev. 21:4) . . . On the other side of the coin, we can rest assured that none of our good deeds will go unnoticed, either.”

As Reformed theologian Michael Horton points out, this opinion—quite common among dispensational Fundamentalists—has “merely managed to move purgatory geographically. No longer is it a place outside of heaven and hell, but it is within the Kingdom of God itself.”

Well that is a good explanation for purgatory. Though a few contradictions arise.

First this is not biblical. It is a rational logical explanation based on the understanding which they had at the time. However to reiterate, this is not from the word of God, but from the mind of a man trying to explain God, which is fine, however in this case the teaching is completely false.

Eternal salvation is either black or white, you are either washed by the blood of Christ, or you are not washed by the blood of Christ. All those not written in the Book of the Lamb are not saved by the blood of Christ, and these same people, are under the wrath of God, and are destined for hell, which is spiritual death, which is forever, and you will never come back. Those whos names are written in the Book of the Lamb are predestined for salvation. The way a child of God comes into Christ is through the scripture, which is the word of God, because faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. That is black or white. there is no degree of sin, as even the smallest sin is cause for death based on Gods law which we are all under, Grace is given to those whom the Lamb died for, as the Lambs blood, who is Christ, washed all sin away past present and future. All the work was done and so purgatory would be a contradiction to this fact and would mean that Christ did not have the power to wash “all” sin away, because purgatory means that a person, who is in purgatory, has the will to decide to purge the final evil out of them, and that would be work wouldn’t it. That would be the work that a person does to be sanctified by Christ. Though we are not saved by our works, and to even believe that you can do work to obtain grace is being in rebellion against God, simple as that, because you are not reading the bible with any intelligence. Not you personally, i mean in general. So you see black and white, purgatory would be the gray area where man could somehow do the work to purge that final sin and that is impossible because we cannot do anything to earn salvation.

To be sanctified is to be set apart, and by the blood of the Lamb who is Christ, all those whom HE “chose” to save are sanctified by His blood, no extra work needed.

Finally, there is an end to even hell. Hell itself will be destroyed along with Satan, sin, the earth and all of her works and they will be destroyed in the lake of fire which is the 2nd death which is to be eternally gone to never come back in thought or mind or spirit.

Daniel 7:11 "I watched then because of the sound of the pompous[great] words which the horn[word of God is judgment] was speaking; I watched till the beast[Satan] was slain, and its body destroyed and given to the burning flame.[The lake of fire/the second death]

Rev 19:20 Then the beast[Satan] was captured, and with him the false prophet[Satan] who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.

Rev 20:10 And the devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast[Satan] and the false prophet[Satan] are. And they will be tormented day and night for [to]ever and ever.

****This verse has been mistranslated, where it reads 'for’ever and ever, it should read 'to’ever and ever. Implying duration through a time, as opposed to infinite time. the final day of Satan, hell, death, earth, and the universe. Meaning, God has an end to His plan, meaning that He had a plan to begin with, so even hell itself, which is the nature of sin, which is being seperated from God, will be obliterated in the lake of fire. Gods permament erasure.

****Root from (Greek) : εἰς
Transliteration: eis
Part of Speech: preposition.
Definitions: into, unto, to, towards, for, among.
Lexicon: eis, a Prep. Governing the Accusative, and denoting
entrance into, or direction and limit: into, to, towards, for, among.
ie: duration through a time; of the time in which a thing is done.

Rev 20:14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

1Cor 15:26 The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.

Rev 20:15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

Rev 21:8 "But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

God says in Genesis 2:17
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for **in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.**Spiritual death is the death in mind here, remember we are all born in the image of God, which means we have the potential to live forever, though Adam and Eves iniquities denied that promise as it put them under the judgment of God.

So this is the state of man, through our parents Adam and eve, we have all born their iniquity which is sin, and we are all born into it, Seeing how this is the case, the punishment for iniquity which is sin which is disobeying God is death, spiritual death. So we are all born spiritually dead.

Now by the blood of Christ, that sin is washed away and that iniquity is washed away, if this is the case, then we are then right and sanctified in the eyes of God. Past present and future sins are washed away, which is the correct definition of baptism, the washing away of sin, it is by Christ’s blood that we are baptized, once those sins are paid for, their is nothing else to it, all work is done,

To believe in purgatory, no matter how awesome the explanatino, would be in rebellion against God, as it is not “HIS” doctine in the slightest, and to believe in that man made doctrine is to not have “COMPLETE” faith in God, Complete faith in God is to let go, the opposite of that is fear of the unknown and that fear is the cause of so many do it yourself salvation plans, which in the end are as nothing.

EnterCanaan,Evidently you subscribe to the Calvanist view of predestination. No one is predestined for Hell. This theolgy(predestination)is dangerous. Our Heavenly Father loves His creation and all people. He offers us the oppourtunity to spend eternity with Him.It is up to us where we spend eternity,we either co-operate(accept)the Grace that is offered to us,or we reject it.For God so loved the world, not God loved a few.May I suggest you study the differant types of litterary styles the authors of Sacred Scripture, inspired by the Holy Spirit wrote for our benefit.I’m not trying to be uncharitable or offencive, but the Church has the teaching authority,Given by our Lord Jesus, led by the Holy Spirit to instruct us.Jesus said the gates of hell will not prevail against HIS CHURCH.May I also recommend the reading of the early Church Fathers(St. Ignasius,Polycarp,Clement of Rome and numerous others).I understand and believe we should read and study Sacred Scripture, but the Church is the Authority in the proper meaning of Scripture otherwise we would end up with 30,000 differant denominations instead of ONE CHURCH.😃

Hi, thanks for the response, maybe I can delve a little deeper for you,

God says in Genesis 2:17
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

This was the moment all of mankind fell. This verse tells us that nobody is deserving of salvation, we are all apart of our original parents sin, we all have the same iniquity, nobody is clean enough, good enough, nice enough, or charitable enough to wipe this sin away. This original sin does not go away, and just because people tend to forget this fact, doesn’t change the fact we are all born dead, deseving of hell, as is Gods perfect judgment after His creation fell after God gave us perfect love. The perfect love and law of God, deserves the perfect Judgement. The law was broken, and so the law came into effect, this carries down until the end of time, including you and me. This is not double predestination, this is the fact that we are all born into sin which means we are spiritually dead… “ALREADY”

Now the biblical doctrine of predestination is a saving grace and mercy to us, it should take the burden off of your shoulders in thinking that you can do anyting to get you saved. The following verses tell us that many are called and few are chosen. It is in error to believe that your will or desire or love for God is a precondition for salvation. We can not CHOOSE God or REJECT God. We are only drawn by God during His good pleasure by hearing the word of God, Because faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. I never suggest double predestination, and the biblical doctrine of predestination is not dangerous, it is the word of God thus it is authority.

It is in error now adays for people to think they deserve heaven because they decide to believe, that has nothing to do with anything, and unfortunately it sounds like you might still have this belief. Well in that case I could understand how you would feel.

Prov 8:21 “That I may cause those who love Me to inherit wealth, that I may fill their treasuries.”

Prov 8:22 “The Lord possessed Me at the beginning of His way, before His works of old.”

Prov 8:23 "I have been established from everlasting, from the beginning, before there was ever an earth."

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:2 He was in the beginning with God.

John 1:3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

John 1:4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

John 1:5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

John 9:5 “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

John 17:24 “Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.”

Rom 9:11 For the children not yet being born, nor having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works but of Him who calls.

Eph 1:4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,

Eph 1:5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will

1Peter 1:19 But **with the precious blood of Christ, as the Lamb without blemish **and without spot.

1Peter 1:20 He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you.

1Peter 1:21 who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

From the mouth of God, we have evidence of predestination. What the problem is, is not understanding what all that entails, that leads to fear, and fear leads to ideas, and ideas lead to rationalization, and rationalization leads is to explain God, and when you come right down to it, nobody can explain God, that will only lead to error. Faith is the fact that it says predestination, so you believe it is so. The understanding may come later.

EnterCanaan. Thanks for those inspired passages and your many comments. I agree that the comments that were used by dmar was not Biblical and he does not even agree with it. You bring about a lot of scripture, but, none of that compels me to not believe that the “prison” is not purgatory if you can believe that the Bible says 1000 years and it does not mean 1000 years to you. When I listen to the logic used to disavow the support of purgatory in The Bible, it makes me believe in purgatory more than ever.

My belief is that no one can enter the narrow gate that is not deserving. I hope that I live in a manner that allows me to enter the narrow gate. When I do, I will not have lived to the point that I can enter Heaven with a soul that is grievous to my life of occasional sin. (Rev 21:27). The place, whether it is purgatory, or this prison in which I will not get out until I have paid my penny. These are a words of a follower of Christ, no more worthy than anyone else, but, that is what these passages write on my heart.

I can also attach passages that discuss the path to Heaven, and, none of them contradict this passage in Matthew, or I Corinthians 3:11-15. May God Bless all of us that have the freedom to discuss these mysteries in a free manner - hopefully enveloped in the love of God.
