Matthew Fox, anyone heard of him?

He was a Dominican priest at one point, right?

Well, I picked up one of his books (at a used book store, I wouldn’t pay good money to support heresy) and decided to look him up on the internet.

Here is a little bit that I found interesting (and laughable)-
Now the good news. The silver lining in the election of this, the first Grand Inquisitor as Pope, is this: Now people of conscience the world over have a clear choice between Religion and Spirituality; Fundamentalism and Wisdom; A Punitive Father God and the Mother-Father Creator of Justice and Compassion; Fascism and Control vs. Letting the Spirit Work; between a preferential option for the rich and powerful (cf. Opus Dei) and a preferential option for the poor (as in liberation theology).

Now all people–and Catholics in particular–are called to find their consciences and take a stand about the Punitive Father God of Fundamentalism and the Divine Wisdom of Justice and Compassion and against idolatry including religious idolatry and papalolatry and the television cult of personality, and between lies and truth.

I think this is the Fox who has become a New Age Guru. There is another Fox who is a legitimate priest and writer.

I used to own a bookstore & we carried a lot of Fr. Robert Fox’s books & pamphlets—a lot of people asked if he was the heretic—of course not, we never sold any of matthew fox’s material, just as we never sold books from any other dissenters
 
Not having heard of him before, back in 1992, I picked up a copy of his book THE COMING OF THE COSMIC CHRIST.
It was without exception one of the most blasphemous, demon-inspired diatribes I have ever read. Ever since then, I consider that man to be heavily under demonic influence. Matthew Fox should definitely NOT be read by Christians.

It was without exception one of the most blasphemous, demon-inspired diatribes I have ever read. Ever since then, I consider that man to be heavily under demonic influence. Matthew Fox should definitely NOT be read by Christians.

Yep, that is the one I picked up and I was thinking the same thing. “The Church is dying”, puts a mental image of some torpedo boat captain standing on the overturned bow of his inflamed and sinking vessel yelling at a grand dreadnaught with hardly a scratch that it has met its match and is going down. Yeah, right… :rolleyes:

Especially the “dream” he has about “Pope John XXIV” who will usher in Vatican III and make the world one big New Age love fest-ick!!! :eek:

Now, I wouldn’t mind a black pope (like Cardinal Arinze) but other than that the man really needs to lay off the acid.

Yep, a friend gave me a copy and I came to the conclusion that he’s lost all both of his marbles. It’s got so little of any worth in there that it’s better as kindling for a warm fire on a cold winter’s night.

One of the worst aspects of it is the way that he takes quotes from valid Catholic saints and mystics and uses them to make his conclusions seem more squared away. It’s a very deceptive book, but as soon as he started blending Eastern mysticism and gay rights into it all as well as the mother goddess stuff, I had him pegged.

I wonder sometimes about Anthony de Mello’s stuff too? His is confusing…

That is what irked me too. Taking quotes from saints out of context is pretty unsavory. I wonder what some of the mystic saints would say about the pope, the patriarchal (he says it like it is a bad thing…) Church etc. I think “Fr” Fox would not find an ally with them.
