Does anyone know what the original names of the gospel writers were i.e. during the time that the apostles lived? What language would that have been? If the names were different maybe a phonetic pronunciation of the name.

I was asked this during an 8th grade class I teach … I didn’t know the answer and am trying to find out.

Thanks.

Matthew is of Hebrew origin. Its Hebrew form is Mattityahu (Matt-tee-YAH-hou), maning “gift of Yahweh” (God).

Mark is a Latin name . Its Latin form is* Marcus* (MAR-koos), meaning “sea-green” or “hammer”…

Luke is a Greek name. Its Greek form is Loukas (LOO-kass), meaning from Lucania, a region in Italy.

John is a Hebrew name. Its Hebrew form is Yochanan (Yoh-HAH-nan), meaning “Yahweh (God) is gracious”.

Most likely all the Gospels were written in Greek. They likely date between 65 AD, and 100 AD.
As for the authorship, I wouldnt go too much into it with 8th graders, you might obscure the message.

Actually Matthew originally wrote in Aramaic, but that manuscript has been lost. The Greek version of Matthew came later.

Certainly this is the witness of Papais, on top of some internal evidence to suggest the same.
