From townhall.com (and it’s on FoxNews, too):
*“First off I want to thank God, because he’s the one I look up to, he’s graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or any other human kind. He has shown me that it’s a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates. In the words of the late (British actor) Charlie Laughton, who said, ‘When you got God you got a friend and that friend is you.’” *

God Bless him! This is exactly what we need to hear more of ,especially from the celebrity culture.👍

I’m just encouraged to see that (knock on wood) the only post-Oscar thread is about something positive. Normally, the day after the Oscars, there is some thread about “Celebrity X did/said scandalous thing Y”. 😛

Was there really nothing over-the-top scandalous this year? I find it hard to believe, but I’ll take it. 👍

Perhaps he is one of the closet conservatives in Hollywood.

Nope, it was a pretty low-key, non-controversial Oscar show. The only scandal was how ill-prepared and…bored…so many of the presenters looked. You guys and gals are wearing - renting, in some cases - million-dollar suits and dresses, wining and dining all evening, and you can’t even look the least bit enthused? It’s no wonder the Oscars still have the reputation being the old-white-guys club.

Maybe.

But you don’t have to be “conservative” to believe in God, or even to be an orthodox Catholic. One must be pro-life and support the sanctity of marriage and so on but one need not consider oneself “conservative.” Just saying.

Considering the subject matter of “Dallas Buyers Club” (very anti-FDA at a time when only homosexuals were against the FDA), maybe he’s more libertarian than actually conservative.

I didn’t really know much about him till I heard his acceptance speech and what a speech it was! Not only did he thank God but he went to great detail about it too. His whole speech was amazing and very inspirational. Someone to look up to, someone to look forward to, and someone to chase. 👍

Good to hear that at the Oscars. Good for him.

Did anyone else hear that the goody bags the nominees received were each worth $55,000?

I have seen a number of people comment on twitter about the reception in the audience when Matthew McConaughhey thanked God.

People rarely thank God. It is professional suicide. That makes Matthew heroic in my eyes:thumbsup:

Here is the full transcript:
Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you to the Academy for this. All 6,000 members. Thank you to the nominees. All these performances were impeccable. In my opinion, I didn’t see a false note anywhere. I want to thank Jean-Marc Vallée, our director. I want to thank Jared Leto, Jennifer Garner, who I worked with daily.
Umm…there’s a few things, about three things to my count that I need each day. Umm…one of them is something to look up to, another is something to look forward to, and another is someone to chase.
Now, first off, I want to thank God 'cause that’s who I look up to. He has graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or any other human hand. He has shown me that uhh… it’s a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates. In the words of the great Charlie Laughton “When you got God, you got a friend, and that friend is you.”
To my family, that’s who and what I look forward to. To my father, who I know he’s up there right now with a big pot of gumbo. He’s got a lemon meringue pie over there. He’s probably in his underwear, got a cold can of Miller Lite. He’s dancing, right?. You Dad, you taught me what it means to be a man. To my mother who’s here tonight, who taught me and my two older brothers, demanded, that we respect ourselves, and what we in turned learned, is then we were better able to respect others. To my wife, Camilla, and my kids, Mr. Stone, the courage and significance you’ve given me every day I go out the door is unparralleled. You are the four people in my life that I want to make the most proud of me. Thank you.
And to my hero, that’s who I chase. Now, when I was 15 years old, I had a very important person come to me and say, “Who’s your hero?”, and I said, “I don’t know. I got to think about that. Give me a couple of weeks.” I come back two weeks later. This person comes up and says “Who is your hero.” I said “I thought about it. You know, it’s me in 10 years.” So I turned 25. Ten years later, that same person comes to me and goes “So, are you a hero?”, and I was like, “Not even close! No, no, no.” She says “Why?”. I said “Because my hero is me at 35.” So you see every day, every week, every month, and every year of my life, my hero’s always ten years away. I’m never gonna be my hero. I’m not gonna attain that. I know I’m not, and that’s just fine with me 'cause that keeps me with somebody to keep on chasing. So to any of us, whatever those things are, whatever we look up to, whatever it is we look forward to, and whoever it is we’re chasing. To that I say “Amen”, I say “Alright, Alright, Alright” (his famous line from Dazed and Confused), I say “just keep livin” (his charity foundation). Thank you.
I thought it was a great speech, not just the God part. Of course, it’s great to see someone thank God in front of the world like this on live television, but I really liked is overall attitude. He is just happy to be alive, and tries to make sure everyone around him is happy. He has a true love of neighbor, which is what God calls everyone to do.

Interesting but it doesn’t mean much with Hollywood folks.

:amen::blessyou:
Maybe.

But you don’t have to be “conservative” to believe in God, or even to be an orthodox Catholic. One must be pro-life and support the sanctity of marriage and so on but one need not consider oneself “conservative.” Just saying.
Amen

Yeah, it was quite the interesting and creative speech!
Very HIM.
He thanks God…and then he quotes actor Charles Laughton, who was well-known to be gay/bi-sexual. I don’t think McConaughey’s AIDS-inflicted, Oscar-winning character is gay, is he?

But no one can find this Laughton quote anywhere so far, so…not sure if his quote is real or from a film or if he quoted someone else of the same name.

Re his feelings toward the sanctity of marriage: He had two children with his girlfriend and they were pregnant with baby number three when they got married, so his feelings about marriage is most likely different than the Catholic definition of “sanctity”.
But he reportedly has a very good marriage.

And he’s a good actor and a really nice guy, if a little…um…unconventional.
Let us not forget–he likes to play the conga drums in the nude! (that might address the “conservative” question…🙂

People thank God at the Oscars all the time, every year.

.
No his character was not remotely gay. He was a rodeo cowboy who hated homosexuals. I think he got AIDS by sharing drug needles. Not moral but not homosexual either.
