May 30 Holy Day of obligation?

Is it a mortal sin to NOT attend mass May 30, 2019 (Holy Day of obligation) so you’d have to go to confession before receiving communion if you missed it ?

It’s binding in exactly the same way as Sunday. I hear in some dioceses it’s transfered to a Sunday, in that case you only have to go on the Sunday. Otherwise it’s twice this coming week.

Depends where you are. In Canada it is not a Holy Day of Obligation as Ascension is transferred to the following Sunday.

It puts me in a bit of an unusual situation. I attend Mass at a Benedictine abbey where Ascension is celebrated on the proper Thursday, and the Sunday is the 7th Sunday of Easter. I only have to go on Sunday for my obligation, but then I miss Ascension. So I do plan to go on Thursday (retired, so I can pull it off!). It will be, as all Masses are at the abbey, in Gregorian chant and well worth the detour!

Whether or not you have an obligation on Thursday depends on where you live,

If it is an obligation day, whether any sin is involved depends why a person did not attend mass. Just as with a Sunday, there are legitimate reasons to miss mass.

Malcolm - what diocese do you live in? That will determine if it is a Holy Day of Obligation for you.

January 1, the solemnity of Mary, Mother of God;
December 25, the solemnity of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
The bishops of Canada have transferred all other holy days to the nearest Sunday

Objectively, yes.

If you cannot attend for some reason, you could talk to your priest before hand and request a dispensation.

Here in the Philippines the obligation is transferred to the following Sunday so May 30 is not a Holy Day of Obligation here.

If the celebration of the Ascension in your diocese has been transferred to Sunday, then going to Mass on Thursday – a weekday Mass in the season of Easter – is a good thing, but not required. The celebration for Ascension, however, will take place there on Sunday.

On the other hand, if the celebration hasn’t been transferred to Sunday, then Thursday will be a holy day of obligation, and the Mass of Ascension will be celebrated on Thursday.

In some Dioceses, the Ascension is transferred to a Sunday. It depends on where you are. If it is on a Sunday, it is not a Holy Day of Obligation.
