Can a catholic take the bread and wine at a protestant church as long as they recognize it is just a symbol or is it best to pass it by?

Hi,

Of course not! Catholics have no business receiving communion in a non-Catholic church. To do so would suggest belief in it. Early on Protestants lost valid ordinations (and therefore valid Eucharist) when they denied the sacrifice of the Mass.

The only exception to this would be one of the Eastern Orthodox Churches that do have a valid Eucharist IF there is no Catholic Church in the area.
