Last night at my 40th high school reunion, one of my former classmates said that she no longer attends mass because the priest at the church she attended basically told her she was not welcome in the church and she COULD NOT receive communion again. This all came about after she was asked to be a sponsor for a confirmation. She has joined a Baptist church. Can a divorced person still receive communion after going to confession and confessing it? And are they still welcome in the church? I don’t think that that priest should be a priest. Thank you

Hi,

Yes, a divorced Catholic may receive Holy Communion as long as he or she had not remarried outside the Church.

The Church allows civil divorce for the equitable division of goods that have been held in common. Of course, the marriage remains valid because civil authorities do not have the power to disolve a valid marriage.
