Hi, my priest at the end of his sermon says “may America Bless God” I think he says it because he says America owes very much to Him so he says America bless God instead of God bless America. Do you think it is necessary? If so, what reasons, as in examples, would you say that?

Though I am a bit uncomfortable with the level of assumptions necessary: I must assume, that your assumption, of his understanding of “owing” wand “blessing” is accurate. Then I must assume if he actually implies substitution or perhaps he implies payback. I would assume he implies payback, where payback is doing God’s Word. Therefore, according to the assumptions, the priest is meaning, “America do God’s Word!” Amen to That!

I once saw this saying on a Tea Party billboard.

WARNING! ANY ATTEMPTS TO HIJACK THIS THREAD TOWARDS PARTY POLITICS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!

I’m guessing that the priest’s words were in keeping with Psalm 103:1-6 (for example, read the following and simply substitute “America” for “O my soul”).

Bless the LORD, O my soul;
and all that is within me, bless his holy name!
Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,
who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the Pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
who satisfies you with good as long as you live
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
The LORD works vindication
and justice for all who are oppressed.

Smart. Probably correct or he was tired of people saying God Bless America when America gives nothing in return or something like that. Well not nothing in return just not enough.

We are to bless God.

I don’t see God blessing a country that promotes abortion, homosexuality, same-sex marriage, staggering divorce rates, idolatry of all sorts, religious pluralism, overwhelming profanity, etc.

I completely agree. Thanks, now I understand.

Us blessing God is different from God blessing us. I’m sure the Protestant penchant for trivializing terminology is going to make this statement appear heretical. But we have been blessing God all these time. To bless God is to praise and worship Him. When God blesses us, He fills us with His grace.
