May catholics/Christians eat food with blood in it (e.g. rare steak)?

I am aware of what our Lord said about clean v. unclean foods. However, do Catholics observe the decree made in Acts 15 and 21 regarding blood in food?

I realize there is a similar prohibition in Mosaic law. However, this decree seems to have predated Moses, as it was also made to Noah, when G-d told him not to eat food with its life still in it, that is, its blood. Further G-d told Peter that, regarding Gentiles, they did not have to observe Mosaic law, but they couldn’t eat food with blood in it(among other things).

There does not seem to be any subsequent abrogation of this decree regarding the rules for Gentile Christians. I’ve read my entire NT and nothing Paul says seems to cancel this out either.

I’m Catholic and I’ve given this some thought. Please understand that I am a practicing Catholic and I have no desire to be antagonistic. I honestly, don’t know the current papal position on this matter and would like to be so informed.

I would like to hear from an expert.

I posted this on Ask an Apologist and I guess it stumped them. Perhaps they are too busy answering questions about whether or not there are dinosaurs in the bible to answer legitimate questions. Anywho… anyone have an answer for me? I would truly appreciate it whatever it is.

There is very little blood in raw steak. It has been drained and cleaned beforehand, during the butchering process. The juices that run from a rare steak are mostly water with a bit of fat; not blood.

That having been said, I don’t know of any modern Church prohibition against eating things like blood pudding, or jello, which do contain animal blood products. 🤷

I think the rule goes along with Paul’s guidelines: eat what you want, but do not scandalize the brothers and sisters you eat with. You’ll not find other Catholics scandalized by rare steaks…well, except the ones scandalized by consumption of meat, or meat raised under certain conditions, and so on.

If one’s vegetarian brothers or sisters have scuples about it, it is charitable to avoid meat when sharing meals with them. That doesn’t happen very often–more often, Mom says, “Oh, c’mon! It’s Thanksgiving! Loosen up an have a little turkey! You know you want some!”–but I would think it a good rule.

OTOH, if your brothers and sisters do not have the charity to avoid meat to respect *your *scruples, then it is your charity which must come to the rescue to make up the difference. That is the way Christianity works.
