May Catholics receive communion in a Lutheran Church?

I attended a funeral for a deceased in-law today at a Lutheran Church. I was intrigued by the similarity to our Catholic Mass, having never attended a Lutheran service before. The order of worship pamphlet we were given invited all Christians who acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior to receive communion, or words to that effect. I chose not to receive because I do not believe the bread and wine were in fact the true presence of Christ. I could not in good conscience consume what the minister called “the body of Christ” when I knew it not to be so. A cousin of mine, also a Catholic, did receive it.

What is the Church’s teaching about Catholics partaking of communion in other churches? Can one consume something as a gesture, or is it heresy to tacitly acknowledge it to be the true presence of Christ when one knows it is not?

No, Catholics are not to partake in Protestant communion services. The Catholic Church does not recognize their clergy are being validly ordained and therefor does not recognize their eucharist as valid.
