I’m not sure if this best fits under this forum; it is certainly not a sacrament, but as a public prayer service is it liturgical? Oh, well, here goes…

My wife and I are very pleased that our daughter has been asked to crown Mary at her school’s May Crowning. We are to provide the crown. Is there any traditional design or particular symbolism to the design of the crown? Any references you can point me to? I’ve got some ideas but would appreciate any (name removed by moderator)ut.

Congratulations to your daughter. My daughter, by virtue of her name (Mary) was asked several times to crown the Blessed Mother’s statue (she was the only Mary in her school and in fact was the only one in her high school which was an all girls Catholic high school). The type of crown that we used was a ring of fresh flowers. If you know the size of the head of the statue a florist will be more than willing to make one up for you. We used a floral crown as Mary is Queen of the May and that month is one at least where we live when flowers other than crocuses and daffodils are blooming.

A simple wreath of flowers is all you need. Roses are traditional, I’ve seen some nice work done with ribbons braided in the crown as well. The important thing is that the crown fit the statue’s head. It can be embarrasing for the crown to slip down to Mary’s neck like a collar.

God Bless Your Daughter!
How proud you must be!
My daughter will be in her first May Crowning (God Bless, Fr. Ben) as a First Communicant. She gets to lead the way and wear a blue cape just like I did as a little girl.
In our Polish Parish, back in the Stone Age, we used fresh white roses, carnations and Forget-Me-Nots. I’m sure that if that is too pricey, silk ones would be nice as well.
