Why is it that marian devotions such as May crownings have declined? Is there a revival of marian devotion?

We had a May crowing this morning. The weather held out just long enough but the flowered crown kept blowing off.
 
The CCD children had a May crowning on the last day of CCD. That is done every year, and the children enjoy taking part in that.
 
May crownings should be revived because they are part of our culture and spirituality. I remember the May crownings of my youth with fondness. I don’t know why they have declined but I hope they make a comeback.
 
We’ve been doing it here for about four years…a revived tradition! 🙂
 
We always have one at our Church, and is well attended.

We had one just before school got out here at Belmont Abbey; I was glad because last year I missed it–exams ran a week later than they did last year so I got to be there for it.

We had one this morning after our 11 a.m. Mass (we’re a Franciscan parish which celebrates the Pauline Mass, believe it or not, and this has been a long-standing tradition). There was a whole procession with the altar servers (I say servers because we have both boys and girls, but they wear the traditional black cassocks and surplices), the lectors and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, followed by the friars and our deacon. After them came our Rosary Altar Society, and behind them was the choir leading Marian hymns. Twice we prayed an Our Father, a Hail Mary, and a Glory Be (for Holy Trinity Sunday). The second graders, who had received First Holy Communion this year, looked so nice in their suits and dresses, and the girl carrying the crown of flowers happened to be the granddaughter of one of the choir members. ^^ People from the congregation also attended, and we sang “O Mary, We Crown Thee” after the statue of Our Lady was crowned outside on the school property.
 
My home Parish still has a May Crowning, my military Parish does not…I don’t really miss it. While I believe everything the Church teaches about Mary, I also believe many OVEREMPHASIZE Mary. (To some that smacks of heresy, sorry.) I had one group of Marians in a military Chapel who insisted on setting up a large statue of Mary next to the tabernacle which left many with the impression they were genuflecting to Mary, not the Tabernacle. This act, I believe, took away from the reverence we do to the reserved Body of Christ. I appealed to the pastor and the statue was moved to a more appropriate location.

To be certain there are historical and cultural roots to the May crowning, and if you enjoy it, knock yourself out…me, I was much more impressed by the local German Catholic Church parading through the streets of town with the Eucharist.
 
We had I think 3 May crownings. One for the statue of Our Lady in our garden outside, one with the children at the school, and then the last one on the 11th for the parish. That way everyone that wanted to could participate at one of the times.👍
