I’d like to start this off by saying that I haven’t been to Confession in 8 years. I’d slowly but surely drifted away from my faith, but I committed a sin that was too much guilt and I wanted to to confess. I was nervous. I wanted to be absolved of this sin more than anything I’ve ever wanted in my life.
I committed this sin either 1 or 2 times, I can’t really remember. And when I went in there, I was so nervous that I may have made it sound like I did it only once. I don’t think that I did it intentionally, but who’s to say that in my nervousness I didn’t try to downplay what happened? At the end of the Confession Father said “You’ve been absolved of all your sins” which would include both times I did it but I don’t know if I communicated myself the right way.

Has anyone else ever had a slip-up like this before?

Lots of people get nervous in confession and forget things, etc. If you are still bothered with it, go back to confession and tell the priest what happened. Write it down and read it if you are afraid you’ll botch it again. Just do it, then forget it and be at peace.

You’re forgiven. The Prodigal son planned his confession and got cut off half way through his planned speech. Be at peace. God takes what we have and knows the intentions of the heart.

From what you described it doesn’t sound intentional. Nervousness can have a real effect on things like this especially when we’re getting something major off our chest. Similar thing happened to me when I was getting back into the faith, I would get so caught up in finally confessing the sin that I felt the need to give all sorts of details (i.e. why I did it, that I know it’s wrong, why it’s wrong, etc.) that were just unnecessary and took my focus off just naming and numbering the sins and receiving absolution.

If you think you didn’t number them properly, just mention the sin at your next confession, say you confessed it before and that you accidentally left out that you may have committed it twice.

But it doesn’t sound like your confession was invalid or anything, to me anyway.

More importantly you are starting a new life after that Confession until you sin again. The Lord is pleased with you.

Go to confession and tell the Priest what you told us. Tell him that it is weighing down on your heart and on your mind.

The Priest will tell you what you need to know. He understands what it is like to return to confession after many years. Then you will be rid of the sin once and for all.

Now you can make confession a part of your regular life.
