My brother in-law (my husband’s brother) attends an SSPX church and is currently dating a young woman who also goes to the church. The relationship seems to be heading towards marriage and I anticipate that within a few years he will get married, and at the SSPX chapel that they both attend. I know that the relationship with the SSPX is irregular at the moment…

My question is this, may I attend the marriage of my brother if he is getting married at a SSPX church with SSPX priests?

They should have those faculties, yes. It’s not always guaranteed. Individual bishops can choose what to do here. Nonetheless, it may not be proper to the OP’s relationship to inquire about those details (or it might be ok); that’s his determination to make alone.

Pope Francis gave them the option; it’s not defiance to exercise a legitimate option.

If the bishop refuses to grant those faculties, he is directly defying Pope Francis. In such a case, if one is unjustly refused faculties, one can appeal to the principle of equity and proceed as he normally would, under supplied jurisdiction, with the tacit approval of the Roman Pontiff.

“Slippery Slope Warning”

Would it be OK to attend an SSPX wedding if one does not receive Communion?

What? It’s my understanding that Pope Francis gave them facilities to hear confessions, not conduct weddings. If he’s now given them facilities to conduct weddings, when did that happen? What’s your source?

The pope allowed local bishops, familiar with the local situation, to make that call.

And local ordinaries are bishops, correct? So local bishops refusing to grant faculties are violating themselves?

So what authority higher than the local ordinary granted them the facilities to conduct marriages?

Just because Pope Francis granted them the ability to grant faculties does not mean they must. He used his own to grant confession, but not marriage.

The pope delegated to local bishops the authority to grant, or not to grant, approval. The local bishop should know the local situation, SSPX chapels and clergy vary. The bishop may also discern something of the family situation, through local pastors.

It’s a slippery slope to presume that because a diocese might approve something, therefore we should act as if approval was already granted.

The pope grants bishops the power to anull (or not anull) marriages. Should we therefore sct as if that was automatic, and get remarried now?

This thread is illuminating on how unimportant the local bishop is, in the eyes of some SSPX supporters.

Yes, you may attend an SSPX wedding.

Pope Francis himself has granted the SSPX the ability to witness valid marriages.

Any Catholic in good standing may receive communion at a SSPX wedding (or any other SSPX mass).
