I have just completed a discussion with my sister re. my obligation to attend(or not) a marriage ceremony. The Catholic couple are both divorced,only one has obtained an annullment and the other is terminally ill. They have been living together for several years and because of circumstances, arranged to be married in the Anglican Church.
My sister believes it would be uncharitable not to attend. I feel that I am actually obligated not to as I would be supporting a union contrary not only to Church teaching but also to the teachings of Christ on marriage.
The “terminally ill” aspect of the situation is such a huge issue that my decision is going to cause a major rift.
