May I cover my head at a Byzantine Rite Divine Liturgy?

We are going to Divine Liturgy in the morning and I’m still undecided about the whole head covering thing. Not that it’s a big major issue for me, I’m just undecided.

I did speak with Father about it and he said that while it is not a custom at his parish, I may certainly do so if I wish.

I’m very much looking forward to this though!

Thank you all for your (name removed by moderator)ut,

Mantillas are not the Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic Church custom. I live in Rusyn Central and the young women in the Catholic and Orthdox Churches either;
A) wear no headcovering
B) wear hats
C) wear scarves. With most of the younger generation that cover their heads follow this custom.

They say “When in Rome…” Well, “When in the Trans-Carpathia diaspora.”
I’ve seen videos of services in the “old country.” Most women seem to wear scarves in Trans-Carpathia* in these church services videos.

*Trans-Carpathia= East Slovakia, South Eastern Poland, Western Ukraine, parts of Romania and Hungry. Essentially the Austrian Empire province of Galacia.
In the ACROD, hats abound and they are quite elaborate, especially at Pascha and Christmas. We often refer to them lovingly as “Pani Hats” 😃

They eliminated our married priests in 1929 and more than half of our members left to form an Orthodox Church.

Actually Carson, “they” eliminated married priests in 1890 through the paperEa Semper. It was over looked until 1929 with the release of Cum Data Fuerit. What happened next can be found in ‘Good Victory’ and ‘Glory to Jesus Christ’ by Father L. Barriger.

Oh I re-read my earlier post;
I should say that in Rusyn central women’
  1. wear hats, like Ung said
  2. don’t wear anything at all
  3. some of the younger women wear scarves.

I wore a beret. 😃

It was a lovely Divine Liturgy! We both really enjoyed it and look forward to going again. I received Holy Communion but DH was too distracted and did not feel he was in the right frame of mind and heart to receive so he didn’t. Father said I did well, but I have to say that I was totally surprised by the texture and taste and nearly gagged on Jesus. 😊 Next time I will be prepared and not surprised.

I think the thing I appreciated the most was no instrumental music. I loved hearing only the voices.
