My friend and her fiancé are non religious, and currently living together. They plan to get married in June and have asked me to be a bridesmaid in their civil wedding this summer. Is it permissible for me as a Catholic to partake in this?

Non-religious, non-Christian people get married all the time. Natural marriages can be just as valid as Sacramental marriages. Are they both free to marry (no one was baptized Catholic or married prior?)

My question is more so “may I be a bridesmaid in this wedding? It is not a Catholic marriage, so is my presence as a bridesmaid sinning in any way?”

We are not supposed to be in the wedding party for marriages where we know the people have been married before or they have been baptized Catholic then rejected the Church. To participate in that way in a known invalid wedding could be sinful at worst and scandalous at best.

If two pagans, non-religious, other religion following people are free to marry, we may be in the party as a bridesmaid.

It’s not a same sex “wedding,” so I don’t see any problem.

OP, you still have not answered whether your friends are baptized Catholics or not.

They cant be baptized Catholics. As long as each of them are not and they are single currently and of opposite sex. Bridesmaid away!

If they are a baptized, they have no formal connection nor adherence to a faith at all at the current moment and have not in recent past. So if they were baptized, then I may not participate?

How would one tactfully find out? “Were you baptized as a Catholic?” I can’t really imagine asking any of my friends a question like that, especially if they aren’t religious and we don’t talk about religion and they’ve never said anything about their religious background, if any.

If you’re close enough to somebody that they’re asking you to be in their wedding - not just at their wedding, but be IN it - then they shouldn’t mind answering this question given that you’re trying to follow the rules of your own religion by asking.
