As I’m sure you are aware, many of the world’s professional athletes and sports-men and women are required to play on Sundays for their team or sport.

Now, ordinarily, I know that sport can be a source of relaxation on Sunday, but the professionals are, in a sense, working, since the sport earns them their living.

In addition, the most elite players are often televised, which necessitates camera crews, commentary teams, stewards etc… who are all therefore working on Sunday aswell.

However, with most sports, it is impossible to play only Mon-Sat. If you are part of a team, you are expected (and paid) to play for the team on Sunday matches. If you are an individual sportsman, then many tournaments stretch across, or end on a Sunday.

I am at the point in my life, where I have to make a decision regarding whether or not to pursue a career within professional sport, and I can’t even begin to decide since I’m unsure what the Church teaches on this specific subject.

Is it a sin to play sports on Sunday when they are also your source of income?
