Does it give someone the right to remarry if his/her spouse is the one who was unfaithful?

Dear friend,

If a person is validly married, he or she does not have a right to try to end it. “What God has joined together, men cannot separate.” (Mk. 10:9) However, if there is reason to doubt that the marriage was valid at the time of the wedding, then an investigation can be made to determine if there was ever a valid marriage present in the first place. This is what the marriage tribunal of a diocese does. If you have reason to doubt the validity of your marriage, see your parish priest about it. Once a marriage is determined to be valid, later behavior of either spouse cannot invalidate it.
