I was married in a Christian church almost thirty years ago. I have heard that I cannot receive communion because I was not married in the Catholic church and I have also heard that I could because I was baptized a Catholic, received my first communion, was confirmed and I am a practicing Catholic. Which is true and if it is that I can’t, have I committed a mortal sin for receiving it? I have been trying to get with my priest but he seems to be too busy to get back to me. Thanks for your answer.

Marfaith,

These links should be helpful for understanding which marriages are recognized by the Church and what those in marriages not recognized by the Church can do to rectify the situation and receive the Eucharist.
