May I receive Communion?

I stopped eating over an hour before Communion time, but I accidentally took a sip of my coffee within an hour before receiving. Before Mass, I explained to the priest what had happened and he said he didn’t know what the rule was, but that he would research it and he gave me permission to receive.

What is the rule on this?
