Hi, I was wondering if you could answer this for me.
I was married in a united church and would like to start attending mass at my local catholic church once again. The issue I have is in being able to recieve comunion once again? I was told that when I got married that I would no longer be able to receive comunion…I would like to come back to my catholic roots and was wondering if this is truly an issue?

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

If you are a Catholic and married outside the Catholic Church, the Church does not consider your marriage to be valid. So every time you have marital relations, you are doing so with someone to whom you are not validly married. Such is a mortal sin.

If neither of you have been divorced in the past, it should be easy to have your marriage convalidated (blessed). If you refrain from marital relations until your marriage is blessed, you may go to Confession and then receive Holy Communion. You are in our prayers.
