May I request Mass intentions for non-Catholics?

I am curious as to whether or not it is appropriate/permissible to request the celebration of Holy Mass for non-Catholics. I am aware that requesting Holy Mass for the Souls in Purgatory is not only appropriate, it is encouraged. Surely there are non-Catholics in Purgatory. Should we only pray for them as a group, or may we ask our Priests to celebrate Holy Mass for them individually?
