May I wear a headscarf all the time?

Hi 🙂 ,

This is my first post on the forum, and I do apologise that this topic seems to be controversial, but I am concerned about doing the right thing.

Ever since I was called to become a Catholic (I was baptised and confirmed at Pentecost 2006) I have felt the desire to cover my head. For a couple of years I wore a small scarf which covered the top of my head at all times. I am weak, and find that these gestures help me to remain humble and to remember God at all times.

However, in the last year I have become concerned about being personally called to do something which is not done by the majority of people. At first I was concerned that I might give others the impression that I thought I was holier than them, which is why I always wore a scarf, instead of a mantilla, so that fewer people would notice my personal devotion. In the last few months I have stopped covering my head all together, which has been very difficult for me because I would very much like to. I stopped wearing a headscarf because I am concerned that I may be following my own will rather than the Church’s and I don’t want to pick and choose my religious observances. I am concerned that I feel the need to cover my head at all times, and not just before the Presence of Our Lord, as it seems quite irregular. Some of the African parishioners seem to cover their heads at all times, although this may just be a cultural difference.

I suppose this ties in to a bigger question, which is about the issue of feeling called to do something by God. If I feel that calling, have prayed about it, and believe it is “real”, is it necessarily genuine? How should I discern whether this calling is one I should observe, or whether I am just being rebellious?

Thank you very much in advance and God bless you all,

Sian

Sian,

These links should be helpful for understanding what the church says about headcoverings and following your conscience. I’ve also included information on scrupulosity in case you or another person reading might suffer from it. If you have any further questions or concerns that are not answered by these links, please contact Catholic Answers directly.
