The month of May (Overview - Calendar) is the “month which the piety of the faithful has especially dedicated to Our Blessed Lady,” and it is the occasion for a “moving tribute of faith and love which Catholics in every part of the world [pay] to the Queen of Heaven. During this month Christians, both in church and in the privacy of the home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month, too, the benefits of God’s mercy come down to us from her throne in greater abundance” (Paul VI: Encyclical on the Month of May, no. 1).

This Christian custom of dedicating the month of May to the Blessed Virgin arose at the end of the 13th century. In this way, the Church was able to Christianize the secular feasts which were wont to take place at that time. In the 16th century, books appeared and fostered this devotion.

The practice became especially popular among the members of the Jesuit Order — by 1700 it took hold among their students at the Roman College and a bit later it was publicly practiced in the Gesu Church in Rome. From there it spread to the whole Church.

The practice was granted a partial indulgence by Pius VII in 1815 and a plenary indulgence by Pius IX in 1859. With the complete revision of indulgences in 1966 and the decreased emphasis on specific indulgences, it no longer carries an indulgence; however it certainly falls within the category of the First General Grant of Indulgences. (A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who, in the performance of their duties and in bearing the trials of life, raise their mind with humble confidence to God, adding — even if only mentally — some pious invocation.

It’s also a practice in some communities to have an image of the BVM go from one home to another. Usually, the image stays with the family for a few days and pray the rosary.

Payer for the Month of May

O Most august and blessed Virgin Mary, holy Mother of God! Glorious Queen of heaven and earth! Powerful protectress of those who love thee, and unfailing advocate of all who invoke thee! Look down, we beseech thee, from thy throne of glory on thy devoted children; accept the solemn offering we present thee this month, especially dedicated to thee, and receive our ardent, humble desire, that by our love and fervor we may worthily honor thee, who, next to God, art deserving of all honor. Receive us, O Mother of mercy, among thy best beloved children; extend to us thy maternal tenderness and solicitude; obtain for us a place in the Heart of Jesus and a special share in the gifts of His grace. Oh, deign, we beseech thee, to recognize our claims on they protection, to watch over our spiritual and temporal interests, as well as those of all who are dear to us; to infuse into our souls the spirit of Christ and to teach us thyself to become, meek, humble, charitable, patient, and submissive to the will of God.

May our hearts burn with the love of thy divine Son, and of thee, His blessed Mother, not for a month alone, but for time and eternity, may we thirst and labor for the promotion of His glory and for thy greater veneration. I am trying to go to daily Mass all month long, praying a novena & will bake a cake in Honor of our Blessed Mother on May 13 Our Lady of Fatima.🍰
And flowers for our Blessed Mother on Mothers Day.
I will also host a Rosary in my home, with people from Church & I will be inviting some neighbors as well.
Daily Rosary of course.

When I was a child my mother established a small grotto in the back yard,
and we would pray there, placing flowers for our Lady. I loved it, I have such
special memories of this grotto.

May Altar, celebration table & crowning ❤️

What a great idea. That seems like a good way to really get children into the celebration too – by tying in Mother’s day with a cake in honor of the mother of all mothers.

Now since I don’t particularly like to bake, maybe I can just buy a delicious cake. 😃

Our parish will have a May Crowning this Sunday before Mass.
 
Fr. Mark makes sure there is a crown of flowers on the statue of Mary at our parish.
 
I will be giving a concert “The Mary Month of May: Marian Melodies” to the glory of God and the veneration of the Blessed Mother!

All these posts have inspired me. When I was younger, my Cuban grandmother had a little shrine to Mary in our home. I loved when she would place flowers in a vase next to her. I am moving into a new home this Saturday and I’m looking forward to creating my own little shrine to Mary. I would also love to have something outside in the garden. A nice meditative spot I can pray the Rosary.

The school children had their annual “May Crowning” on Friday at the beginning of the Mass that they attend weekly. Prior to the Sunday Masses, the Knights of Columbus carried the litter holding the statue of Mary.

We are truly a family of believers…

All my protestant friends condemn us though.
I say to them, are you calling mary ‘blessed’ lk.1:48?
I say to them, are you calling mary ‘your mother’’ jn.19:26-27?
Then you should be like we do, and, love and honor her like the 4th commandment says.

The fullness of the faith…
 
Well, conveniently enough, since I was baptized last month, this month I did my first First Saturday Devotion.

Plus I’ve been making an effort to listen to more Marian hymns and be more attentive to praying the rosary and offering it up in reparation for the blasphemies against her immaculate heart.

Finally, if things work out (still waiting on my copy of the Little Office to arrive…) this is the month I’ll be invested with the brown scapular!
 
I’m not sure how to increase my Rosary recitations (10 -15 per day now) But I have become more involved in my EF parish and will be leading the Rosary every Sunday for a while.

Our Mary Crowning was last weekend. Very beautiful.

May is one of my favorite months.
