There may be tax reasons, if the parish provides statements for parishioners to deduct their contribution on their taxes. Also, as some one has mentioned, parishes now do criminal background checks on those who might be working with children. It may be that the parish does a check on any new people coming into the parish, as a matter of policy.

Don’t assume that the deacon was wrong.

If that’s their policy, it needs to be changed. If someone is working with children, yes, they need to be checked out. They don’t need a SSN to issue tax statements

There’s simply no reason for the parish to ask for such information under the given circumstances. 🤷

If they’re screening everyone who comes to the parish to see if they’re a registered pervert or other sort of criminal…unless they’re working with children or applying for a job or volunteer work that involves parish funds…that would be just wrong.
