May one choose a parish?

I’m a newbie, so hopefully I’m posting this in the right area. If not, sorry for wasting time.

Here are my questions:

***Can you choose a parish? Are you obligated to be a member of the parish closest to you?
**
***What do you do if the parish near to you is faithful to the Church, but does not feel at all like a home? **
***Is it acceptable to go to RCIA in one parish, and go to Mass in another?
**
*Is your parish the place where you always go to Mass?
Explanation below:

Anyway, my fiance and I are having trouble finding a parish. The problem is that he speaks Spanish, and I speak both English and Spanish. He might possibly continue with all of his sacraments (its still in the air) as he’s been baptized Catholic, but he’s never been properly Catechized.

So, we started out going to Spanish speaking Masses in our area. Unfortunately, that was no good as half the time the Mass was only barely valid, and definitely tilted towards the illicit side.

So then we started going to Mass in English (hey, it may help future Mr. Husband to learn some English!) at a very faithful parish about 45 minutes away. I love it so much there that I want to join the parish! It is very Catholic- not “traditional” or “progressive” just Catholic. I feel like I finally found the Church that I had lost as a child. (Let’s just say I did some serious wandering before coming back to Rome…)

The problem is, as my fiance pointed out, there is a parish quite close by that we could go to, that would save gas, and that would not be as much of a problem. The problem is, I’ve been burned a little by that parish, as they were less than caring about my mother apostatizizing (and this includes the priest) and openly stare at my fiance when we do go to Mass there (this was another problem we had in Spanish Masses, its because I’m white and he’s mexican). I don’t feel welcome at all there, and while the idealist side of me thinks it would be great to teach a lesson, the practical side of me wants that not only should I feel at home in my parish, but that my fiance, who will soon begin RCIA (or RICA) should learn his faith in an area that is far less racist and more diverse- but still entirely faithful to the Church.

I thought that I had finally found a parish home after so many years of grabbing Mass wherever I could, and while no parish is perfect, the one that is farther away feels so much like a spiritual home.

Should any of this even matter, since as Mr. Future Husband pointed out, the Church teaches the same no matter what building it is in?

Anyone have advice?

Hi,

The Church does not require you to register in the parish in whose boundaries you life. Go where you are most at home. So what if it is farther away. What could be more important to you?
