May "the pill" be used to help conceive?

My wife and I have been married for 10.5 years. Although we have been very Catholic in our marriage, we have not been blessed with a child. My wife’s OB/GYN wants her to take “the pill” to regulate her very irregular cycle, in the hope that, once regulated, it will help us conceive. I’m afraid doing so might be against the teachings of the church, and I hate the thought of my money supporting the manufacturers of contraception.

As faithful Catholics can my wife take “the pill” since the intention is to eventually facilitate conception rather than prevent it? Would we have to be chaste while her cycle is being regulated?

Dear PA,

Yes, your wife is certainly allowed to take the pill to regulate her cycle—especially in an effort to conceive. The Church does allow the pill for medical reasons so long as contraception is not one of them.
