May virginity be preserved within a marriage?

My general understanding is that one factor necessary in procuring a valid marriage is consummation after marriage. Marriages that were never consummated can be annulled. However, there have been many saints who have preserved virginity within a marriage. St. Cecilia, for example, preserved her virginity despite being married as well. Does this mean that her marriage was invalid? Or is my general understanding of marriage flawed? Or are there special dispensations?

Thank you

Hi,

A valid marriage becomes so with the recitation of the vows. It is made complete when it is consummated. Mary and Joseph had a valid marriage—as did St. Cecilia.
