May we receive Holy Communion with this in our past?

My husband and I are not Catholic yet (well, I am totally in my heart, we’re going through RCIA. … is it Easter yet?!?) and I have a question about the Eucharist. I read today that if you get sterilized that you cannot take part in communion in the CC. About five years, before Catholicism was even a blip of a thought on either of our minds, dh opted to have a vasectomy. We both discussed it and decided, b/c of medical issues, that a vasectomy was a good contraceptive option for us. Now that we’re on our way into the CC (oh my GOSH this makes me so happy!!!) and have read up on what the church teaches regarding contraception we both feel heavily convicted about what was a unified decision about dh having the procedure. I cannot, in words, express my deep regret over having done this. DH feels the same. We both realize now what a terrible decision it was to do something so permanent. . . so my question is this: Once we become Catholic are we barred from taking part in communion?

Thanks for the help! Many blessings to you!

Hi,

No, you will not be barred from receiving Holy Communion as a Catholic. It probably wasn’t even a sin for your since it seems that you didn’t know that it was.
