Maybe I should end the relationship

Hi 🙂

If you don’t mind, I need a little help discerning whether to end a relationship. I think God is either telling me to continue with the relationship or he’s been telling me to end it for quite some time, and I just haven’t been open enough to that idea.

I’m in my early 20s. I have been in a string of bad relationships. I spent my teen years “looking for love” in the wrong places. I have two children out of wedlock. One from a previous relationship, and the other from my current relationship. I was baptized and confirmed not too long after I became pregnant with the first child. Swore I was going to be chaste after that relationship, and only date a practicing Catholic. I met my current boyfriend who is Catholic although not practicing (wasn’t raised in the faith, not even confirmed). I thought perhaps that Jesus told me that He just wanted me to be friends with him at the time, but I felt like that was impossible. I was head over heels, like a fool. The relationship has always felt rocky. We’ve broken up and gotten back together several times. My significant other didn’t necessarily have his life together when we met (he was in his late 20s), and I can’t exactly say he has his life together now, two years and a baby later, although there has been a great amount of improvement. Although I am embarrassed to say this, since some people tend to freak out when I do, he struggles with an addiction to a medication. Our relationship survived to this point, even with the addition of another child and me undergoing intensive treatment for a year for an aggressive cancer (I was diagnosed during my 2nd pregnancy).

My biggest concerns revolve around the fact that he isn’t a practicing Catholic, and I wouldn’t consider him reliable enough in the event we ever got married. Case in point, he’s been out of a job for a long while and while he does do an occasional job search, he’s not looking for a job in a hardcore fashion like “maan I gotta hurry and get a job so I can support me and kid.” He tends to be comfortable with other people providing for him. :o:shrug:

The reason I stay is that I continue to see improvement in him over time. He’s been working with his doctor on getting off of the aforementioned medication. There’s a part of me that feels he’s going to grow closer to God and finally get his life together. But of course, I can not tell the future. This is where the fuzziness in communication between God and I exists, if that makes any sense. I thought that after I prayed a novena to St Christopher a few months ago, that St Christopher was saying that this wasn’t meant to be. But things got a little better in the relationship and that sense of “I need to end this” went away.

But here I am again. Please help me, and have mercy on me. :o

We can’t change our past, but we can change our future. Have you sat down and talked to him about this?

Maybe my opinion is biased because my first husband also had an awful addiction to prescribed medication and I went through hell with him, but in my personal experience staying with someone with hopes that he is going to change is not a good idea. Again I may be biased but I stayed many years in a living hell because I had the same way of thinking. I am not sure what kind of medication he is addicted but I know those addictions are very serious and unless he himself takes an active decision to leave it and enroll himself in a treatment, it is going to be very difficult for him to overcome same. However, all I am going to ask you is think about your children!!! You have two children and you need to think about them. Is this situation affecting your children? Is it harmful for your kids? Is his addiction interfering with his ability to treat you and the kids with love and respect? If the andover to any of those question is yes, then you have to do something for the sake of your kids.

Take a good, hard look at your own words. What do you think will come of this relationship?

The cancer experience has helped you realize that death can happen at any time in our lives. You need to put God first in your life! remove anything that comes between you and Love of God. Jesus said if you love me, keep my commandments. They are there to protect us. If you are sexually intimate with this guy, that sin will put up a wall between you and God. Your kids need you to follow God’s will in your life. Does he bring you up, and bring out the best in you? does he bring your down? The Baltimore Catechism stated that sex outside marriage is a mortal sin. “Mortal sin makes me an enemy of Jesus Christ!” Please don’t put your self in the position of having more babies with a man who has not dedicated his life to you.

Chastity before marriage is how you develop the strength, and self control to be faithful to your future spouse.

Chose a husband who is the kind of man you want your son to grow up to be!

I work with an organization that supports women facing unplanned pregnancies… so my first comment is to commend you for carrying your babies and being a parent.

There is a bonding that takes place when people are involved sexually… and that bond, which was created by God for marriage, can make clarity and discernment extremely difficult. The first thing I would reccomend, therefore, is to stop having a sexual relationship with this man. Doing so will help eliminate the bonding hormones from the equation and help you see the whole thing more clearly. This is going to be something that you would have to respectfully and lovingly discuss with your boyfriend. If he is a stand up guy, he will likely be willing. If not, your answer is pretty straightforward, right?

You might also want to step up your faith practices. Go to confession, pray everyday… get to adoration and Mass regularly. Begin to focus on making great choices for yourself and your children. They NEED you to be healthy and strong and the best way to do that is to work on your relationship with God. Encourage your boyfriend to do these things, too, if he is willing.

God CAN work miracles in your life, but you need to be open to them. You have already made some GREAT and hard choices (keeping your babies… becoming Catholic) now it is time to let God continue the great restoration project in your life. I believe you can do it!

May God be with you.

Thank you all for your responses. It means a lot to me. I haven’t talked to my boyfriend yet about my feelings yet. And just to clarify, my significant other and I have not had any type of sexual relations with one another for about a year now.

Right now I feel angry. I know I have to own up to my choices but I wonder why God wouldn’t make things clearer to me earlier on. I feel like I’ve wasted so much of the time God has given me and I fear my time here is going to be cut short. It’s not God’s fault, but when I was a little girl I was obsessed with getting married. It was the one dream I didn’t let go of, unlike all the rest. But I can’t even have that. There’s no way, that if this relationship ends that I am going to pursue another one while my children are still under my care. I’ve done enough damage.

Hun, God will not “cut short” your life because you wasted a little time trying to find your way. If anything, He might actually pro-long it. I felt the same way when I changed majors into a different college after a year of study, of wasting time and money on something that I found I didn’t want to do for the rest of my life for a career. My parents understood and didn’t punish me for it and neither did God nor will he for you. God always gives you a second chances, time and time again, until the moment we die.

Also, it’s good not to pursue for a relationship because it may not be what God has in store for you. Think more of doing God’s will and if God’s will brings in a man into your life to be your husband and father to your children, God will do so at the proper moment, should that be God’s Will for you. That is how I approached my discernment of my vocation going into college, If it’s God’s will for me to marry a man, he will bring him into my life at the right moment, whether if that’s in college, after, or not at all if that is not what His Plan is for me.

God Bless you.

Like I mentioned in a previous post…
Life is like a box of chocolates you never know what your gunna get !
that goes for all manner of things…
What to do in your situation ? God only knows… you have gone a long way down the wrong road of life, bit hard to reverse back to where it all began…
but your not Mrs Robinson Caruso on making mistakes in life, join the Queue …
The only thing you can do is start a plan … think about your options and seek out friends that you can relate to. and talk to people…
option # ! stay where & how you are and make the best of it…
option # 2 plan a new life, away from the people that you believe are holding you back.
start saving money & look for a nice country town far away, then check out employment there… & start dreaming of a new environment in which to raise your children, & take into consideration the fathers of these children… it may seem complex, but you must do something… doing nothing should not be an option…
good luck and God Bless

Why not both pray The Holy Rosary together a few times during the week together, visit your Local Priest, attend RCIA together, attend Mass and Reconciliation together, and if the Priest is agreeble, Retrovaille or counselling prior to Marrying.

I believe that Retrouvaille is for married couples, but counseling would be good. Drug treatment and rehab would be even better for her SO.
