For Mt Angel…they are GREAT! I don’t know if I would believe your friend…pretty much second hand stuff. Our priest came from Mt. Angel and is great. Also I have attended several lectures up there INCLUDING the about the new translation and they are totally in conformity to the Church. I also have attended vespers and Mass up there…all reverent and in conformity. So personal experience and I don’t see the same thing. Nor have I heard it second hand from the seminarians or religious up there.Mt Angel, well you cant say much bad about somethign that churns out piests!But we have a good friend who is a seminarian there now and even he reports some troubling things.
And there are some bright spots in the “PDX” area. I attend an Opus Dei retreat there once a year.

Unless you yourself had theology instruction at UP or Mt Angel - you are basing your impressions upon the third party testimony of others … which of course is taken in and heard through their lens at their level of understanding and then re-presented for you … and based upon that you can say cetegorically that an istitution like UP is not catholic? … and another poster dismissed the seminary in Portland … which is not in Portland but is the seminary at Mt Angel …I’m not sure what kind of “expert” one has to be to offer an opinion based on experience but I graduated from Carroll College in MT. (Catholic) I met my wife and we moved to Seattle for her and I to also attend SU (“catholic” ) and my sister went to UP (“catholic”) My sister is not catholic but I was disappointed with the “theology” instruction she received at UP. SU is unbelievably liberal to the point that the theology classes I was in were lead by a man who now heads up his own cult. called “patmos in the woods” and Carroll was pretty good. I think it is getting harder to find orthodox Catholic schools these days. Even a kid from our youth group who is now attending Gonzaga is reporting some very troubling things. I know much about these areas and have lived in all of them.

I have had many opportunities to interact with both UP and Mt Angel on various levels … have met graduates from both insitutions whose tenure there covers multiple decades … I know Monks and faculty at Mt Angel and Priests and faculty at UP.
Both colleges are excellent places to learn and are faithful to Catholic teaching … are there people at them who may not be as faithful as we want? Probably … Are there students at both instutions who a less then zealous for the the faith - probably … Jesus selected twelve men to follow him and they all did well at times, some faltered but recovered
and one lost his way in the end 
…If you get the chance to attend the Annual Mt Angel Seminarian Dinner in the fall. You will get a chance to visit with the men who are studying for the priesthood
… go every year as I do and you will get a chance to visit with them as they progress on this journey … you will be amazed and inspired and you will have great hope for the future of the church:extrahappy: … and pray for them 
And if you see a need in your parish - get involved and participate, financially support your parish, do something other then complain and leave … My :twocents:
