Maybe we need a Abe Lincoln in the WH

Another Abe Lincoln would be good. But another John Paul II would be infinitely better 👍

Are you confusing Abe Lincoln with the Factual Abe, or the Legend?
Never forget, Lincoln was the first president to abolish the Bill or Rights “for the duration”.
Under his regime, there was no freedom of the press. Numerous anti war and anti- Republican Party newspapers were arbitrarily shut down and their reporters and editors imprisoned without due process. In addition, many civilians were arrested on questionable grounds by the Army and were sentanced to prison via courts martial with their property confiscated. And, I am not talking about civilians from Southern States, but from the States of the Union.
Even the apprehension and conviction of the people involved with John Wilkes Booth and the assissination would never meet standards of legal probity before or after the war period.
In fact, the entire War between the States was fought on questionable constitutional grounds. For example, if Secession of the Southern States was not legal, then how can anyone justify the breaking away of the Western counties of the Commonwealth of Virginia to form the Unions State of West Virginia?
The Union Army’s behavior against Southern civilians during “Thee War of Northern Agression” was particulary agregious. Troops billited in civilian homes without permission of the owners (a big violation of the Bill of Rights) as well as confiscation of private property (and I do notmean slaves!), not to say outright looting by private soldiers!
The fact is, that from 1861 until his death in 1865, Abraham Lincoln acted as a dictator, Congress being a mere rubber stamp for him.
The only reason he is remembered favorably is that he won the war and his assassination
made him a martyr. That plus 100+ years of revisionist mythic history and anti-Southern propaganda in our public schools has elevated him to secular sainthood. Never forget, for all the good he did in keeping the US together he had feet of clay, and…he regularly used the “N” word when referring to our darker brethren.
The last thing our country needs at this stage of our history is a re-creation of the “sainted” Abe for a President!
 
No I was just reading about his day of prayer and fasting for our nations sins. Thats all.

Spare me the “war of norther aggression” BS. The southern traitors started the war and deserved everything they got – and more.
Arrests of southern sympathizers (copperheads) and closings of newspapers (usually temporary) are more disturbing and I won’t try to justify them all except to say I’d cut some Lincoln a little slack since he was trying to hold the country together during a civil war.
Was he a saint? No. To call him a dictator is ridiculous. Go back and read what the papers were saying about him (keep in mind that only very few were closed). He was constantly hamstrung by Congress. His policy swerved to lead public opinion but not alienate it which led to him always being unpopular. That’s not a dictator.
