WASHINGTON (AP) - The archbishop of Washington, Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, will turn 75 on Thursday, the age when all Catholic bishops must submit their resignations under church law.
However, that does not mean McCarrick will be leaving his post anytime soon, said Susan Gibbs, a spokeswoman for the Washington Archdiocese. Although church law requires him to submit a letter of resignation to Pope Benedict XVI, McCarrick will continue to serve as archbishop at the pope’s pleasure until the resignation is accepted.
“Cardinal (James A.) Hickey, his predecessor, was here until he was 80 years old, so the date a resignation is accepted may vary,” Gibbs said.
McCarrick is greeting the milestone with enthusiasm.
“It is certainly a gift from God to have had 75 years of life to be in good health and to have enough energy to do my work,” McCarrick said in a statement released by the archdiocese. . . .
