Not only is it a bad influence, but the food is bad as well. Ever since I saw that movie “Super Size Me”, I’ve only been to McDonalds about 3 or 4 times in a few years. Some of their food is just awful…yuck!

Puzzle Annie,
You make a wonderful point! How can we expect children to act like adults in public when they haven’t even had the benefit of going out and being allowed to make the “mistakes” in a setting which isn’t as intimidating. We are there to teach and correct.
Why would you want your children to act like adults? They’re children, not adults. They should behave accordingly, but sometimes I think we expect too much from our children. Personally, I’m tired of getting bad looks when my 9 month old starts babbling in Church. We don’t have a crying room, and quite frankly, I’m not sure I’d use one.

Sorry, off topic, but that post got me thinking. I don’t know if that’s what you meant, but it just reminded me of how we have a hard time finding the balance between letting kids be kids, and discipline.

I agree Pira – but I thikn they’re talking about the 5-10yr olds or so…that said, I totally disagree that mcDonalds can help…LMAO, that place is poison! I stopped int here for the first time in months b/c we were screwed out of lunch b/c we had to go pick up DS in 10min…(carpool fell thru) – no other stops between the chiro and the school…so we did McD’s – I just hate to pay for lunch if I have bread and peanut butter at home! LOL…anyway – the food is NASTY and now the atmosphere is going down the crapper too. My 2yo got her Witch doll…unreal. As you can see, I do not have too much time on my hands either…I didn’t have enough and got careless.

Sure, I see a way that fast food joints can help kids learn to behave in “eating out” environments, but why choose mcD’s who promotes these toys? Why not the food court at the mall or Subway (who’s food is way healthier) or some small mom and pop shop that loves to have kids there? Just b/c they can aid in other wways doesn’t mean we should ignore that they’re giving our kids “witch” dolls – and yes, I should have looked at the banners and seen, but ****, last time I was in there I think it was a care bear or pound puppy or something equally as mundane…not a midriff-showing teenage witch doll…

Catholic Dude:
When he saw them here or for the first time?
Those were when the video games were cool and original, especially the theme music which gets stuck in your head.
He was very excited to see the picture you put up of them, but he also had all of those toys when they were cool, too. 😃 They were one of his favorites (the original mario games and all the toys that went along with them)

That isn’t what I meant. I meant well behaved, according to appropriate standards. I have written several posts about that very subject because I too have gotten the “stares”. Sigh…

My apologizes for not being clear.

Our McNation is going to McHell in a happy meal-sized McHandbasket. I say boycott McD’s. Their exploitations of workers and consumers are enough to make anyone sick to their stomach!!

That’s a good one 😃

I haven’t eaten at McD’s in years and years. I read a book a while back called “what would Jesus eat?” it was a good book about newtrition and it showed America’s world wide heath ratings back in the 1930’s and on up til now and our health rating down almost directly praportional to the number of fast food joints in our nation going up. did you know that places like McDonalds has to put chemicals in their “meat” to make it look and taste like meat? Some of his ideas are a little out there, but I reccomend reading “natural cures that ‘they’ doin’t want you to know about” by Kevin Trudue. His insites into the american food industry are interesting. also, the above book as good too. I can’t remember the author though.I got it at a christian (not catholic) book store.
the W.I.T.C.H. toy is just one small drop in the havy bucket of disgusting sin in our fast food resteraunts and MdD’s is not the only one. (although I think they are the worst). But, if that horrible dall is what makes some mom’s stop going there, than great. I say never look back. go to a small diner if you want a quick and easy meal for your family and it will offer them the same chance to learn good resteraunt manners and eat much better food. and that’s my :twocents:

that movie supersize me is a bunch of malarky!!. compare to familys here. Mine eats lots of red meat, eats un Godly amount of fast food, drinks lots of pop, average lifespan in my family about 86, 87 or there abouts. my wife’s family eats health foods lots of vegies, not veretarians, but is light on the meat, never eats ham, doesnt eat fast food hardly at all, average lifespan 68, with no one living byond 74. Sounds like to me theres alot more to health than what you eat to me. Like genetics!!!

I see these promotional items as harmless as a child dressing up as a witch on halloween.

I stay clear of McDs for one reason only, their food is the worst of the fast food franchises…well…maybe second right under Taco Bell.

What a hoot! As I mentioned earlier in the thread I sent an e-mail to McD’s stating that I disliked this promotion and would be avoiding their restaurants until it was discontinued. I got a reply that was very form mail’ish, sorry you didn’t like our innocent promotion, witch stands for the initials of their names, etc. The thing I found interesting (worth a snort of laughter) is that it was signed by “Damien”.

As if we didn’t already suspect as much.

(sorry, I couldn’t resist sharing)

I couldn’t help but start laughing out loud while I was in the McDonald’s drive through yesterday!

Yeah, I know I trashed them earlier, but I forgot one thing. I do go there for one thing and one thing only. The orange soda! I don’t know why, but I get a craving for their orange soda so bad sometimes that I go there just for that. I think it’s from when I was a kid and they had those big yellow jugs of orange soda at all the little league baseball games.

Anyway, just thought it was funny enough to share. 🙂

Or, what about Chik-Fil-A?? I love that place! The toy is usually an educational book of some sort. They’re closed on Sundays, too, which I really like. And the food is healthier… and they have milk (which a lot of fast food joints don’t offer). Also, they are selling calendars right now that are absolutely hilarious!! Cows dressed up as King Arthur and Joan of Arc and Braveheart (named Bravehoof!). I might get one…

Just my :twocents:

I don’t know about the state of the current happy meals, but I do know that, when traveling, those golden arches look pretty good when it’s rest room time. As far as lots of people being overweight because of fast food, hogwash! Just eat fast food once a week, and you won’t have any problem.

How unfair to children to take them to say, a theater, or other public place where good behavior, quiet, sitting still etc. are necessary without any preparation or any training. Discipline is a long slow process and does not happen overnight, but McDs can help and be one phase in that process.
Yes. People need to keep in mind, though, that it is the easiest if you expect your children to eat dinner at home as if they were in a restaurant, then choose the restaurant based on what your kids are capable of.

Our kids happen to be able to sit in one place for a long time, if they have something to do, so we have always been able to take them out pretty much anywhere except very quiet and dignified places. Other kids with less of an ability to focus are going to need places that serve food pretty quickly, but any kid can learn to understand that you stay at the table in your own chair until you’re finished, speak at a volume appropriate to a situation where everyone you’re talking to is three or four feet away, and so on. If you expect them to always say “Please” and “Thank you” when you serve them and to say “I don’t care for this” instead of “This is yucky!” (permitted at our house only for spoiled food that is literally inedible by anyone), then you will be pleased to find that they will naturally treat restaurant staff the same way.

Eating at restaurants is exciting. Don’t change the rules on them or expect your kids to act better there than they do at home. If you take them away from the table when they misbehave, the same treatment when you’re eating out will come as no shock. When you tell them to settle down or they’re headed for the car, they’ll know you mean business. Really, it makes every night nicer.

As for Happy Meals, I think they are a bad idea. Why get them in the habit of impulsively treating themselves to useless stuff that will wind up in the wastebasket in a month? Free stuff that you don’t need is worse than nothing at all. The same goes for “Value Meals”. Paying just a little extra to buy far more than you need instead of just what you need is no bargain. It is a waste of money that will only harm you in the long run. You can’t do these things as a “treat” and then expect them to want to carefully select quality things that will give them long-term enjoyment, and only in the amounts needed.
