Me vs a Pushy Receptionist

The receptionist is doing her job, and you are just making it harder. Frankly, I doubt she gets paid enough to keep putting up with that kind of nonsense.
Not sure what makes you think I’m putting up any kind of “nonsense”.

Imagine the conversation like this:

Me, walking in: Oh! I forgot about the picture thing.
Her: Can’t I just take it now?
Me: How about next time?

At another visit she adds: you really need to let me do this. It’s REQUIRED.

Let’s disabuse everyone here of any type of scenario involving fisticuffs or kerfuffles. 🙂

It’s all rather civilized.

My (growing) annoyance is hidden behind a serene smile.

“Sorry I’ve been such a stickler, let’s just take my picture and get to working out!”
So that’s the thing…why in the world do I have to submit to a picture so I can work out?

My obligation is to pay for the class, work out unobtrusively, and go home.

Nothing more and nothing less.

You do realize that she’s not making this up to annoy you, right? She has a boss over her shoulder telling her every day “You really need to get all of the new cards issued” or whatever it is she’s doing this for. You giving her the runaround is putting her in a bad position with her boss. Yes, she’s going to get more firm as you passive-aggressively blow her off. Eventually, you may hear that they’ve stopped allowing patrons in without the picture.

Either let her do her job or take your issue to someone in authority - stop making her look like she’s just not following through with her responsibilities. Right now, you’re being very casual about someone else’s job, and that’s just selfish.

There is no shooting, no ballistics, no careening of orbs going on in this gym.

It’s just sweet little ole me smiling and saying, “Not today”. 🙂
So you’re just making her look bad at work instead of dealing with your problem, why? Does it make you feel good to pick on low wage workers?

Oh, I haven’t said it’s the receptionist’s fault.

She could just tell the owner: “This woman doesn’t want her picture taken” and then all of us would be happy.

Just like the instructor could say: “This woman doesn’t want to exercise bra-less”, and then all of us could just go on an work out like we want to.
She probably has told her boss you refuse to take it.

Chances are, he told her to tell you it’s required.

Take your issue to the person in charge, look them in the eye, and state your case like an adult. Come to a resolution with management.

No, there is no contract. I just purchase “punchcards” for 5, 10 or 20 visits.
If you’re not contractually obligated to take the picture and don’t want to, then don’t. But don’t lead them on as if you’re going to. If you haven’t signed anything, at best you have a common law contract with them where you show up and pay for 5, 10, or 20 visits, go workout those times, and then pay for the next 5, 10, or 20 visits. I don’t see how they can otherwise require you to submit to a new corporate policy since you have no other agreement with them. Perhaps the tickets or whatever you buy state something like “by redeeming this voucher, you agree to yada yada yada” but that is rather weak.

Their business, their rules. If you can’t comply with them, go somewhere else.
I pay for classes. I get to work out.

As I said earlier, if they make some weird demand that says, for example, “All women who have birthed children must not wear leggings” I’d shrug, and ignore that rule.

I don’t quite agree.

She paid a company for a service, they accepted her money in exchange for providing that service.

I don’t think they automatically have a right to add new terms to providing the service, again assuming it wasn’t in the agreement somewhere.
Yep. This. ^^

Not since I was a teenager and got an education.
Good for you! I guess with that in mind, you’re entitled to act this way. After all, if the receptionist didn’t want you screwing with her day over…spite? boredom? (you’ve said the pic is no big deal) she’d go get an education.

Treat her, and everyone for that matter, with basic respect.

I agree with those who brought up the identity theft angle. A photo can be used to be sure someone hasn’t stolen your gym ID or membership. If you are concerned about your photo being misused, you can either ask about their privacy policy or ask to speak to the manager to see if your photo ID will be sufficient.

Mainly for this reason: why in the heck do I have to give my picture so I can work out?
You don’t necessarily. But the decent thing to do is own the problem and stop putting the receptionist in a bad spot, which you seem incapable of acknowledging.

Why do you unapologetically treat people this way?

If you ask the manager instead of giving the receptionist the business, maybe he or she would tell you.

Actually most of us already have a photo ID–it’s called a drivers license. I can see no good reason for most places to actually need their own photo id cards. If the gym is concerned that someone is using someone else’s membership card–they can ask for another piece of id or to see the persons drivers license. Just last week at my bank–there was a new teller who didn’t know me and requested that i show my drivers license–worked just fine. Now if the bank wanted to generate a new bank membership card requiring my photo for me to carry around and show every time I went to the bank --well I might look for a new bank.
Yep. And this ^^ too. 👍
There was a game store where my son wanted to trade in one of his games and they wanted my finger print in order to trade it in–I drew the line there and let them know we would no longer be doing business with them. No idea if they still have that policy–we’ve never been back to buy or sell. I don’t like my picture taken and it irks me when places want it and when there appear to be more than workable alternatives.
The peace of Christ,
Mark
Yes! You get it.

Yeah. What Mark said.

Mainly for this reason: why in the heck do I have to give my picture so I can work out?
So go another gym where they don’t require a picture. Or speak to the manager.

Really, is it that big a deal? You mentioned you don’t like the way you look and want to “pretty up”. Are all the other ladies coiffed and made up ?

Why make it hard for this woman?

If you ask the manager instead of giving the receptionist the business, maybe he or she would tell you.
I’m assuming it’s for security.

But if I don’t wish to comply, what are they going to do? Not let me work out?

Really?

My point is still this: even if they need it so they know I’m who I say I am, so what??? I paid my money to work out. Why do I need to prove I’m who I say I am to sweat?
