Me vs a Pushy Receptionist

This thread is making me upset.

I do not like the entitled attitude, the rudeness that is being displayed toward someone who is “just a receptionist” and who should “get more education” – I have a masters degree and have worked in jobs that required only a high school diploma. That does not make me (or anyone else) “less” or “beneath” anyone else.

God made each and every one of us and he places us where we need to be at any given time.

Every single person deserves to be treated with respect.

There has been damage to respect on this thread for sure. It saddens me because I really like the OP.

It makes me sad too.

I can’t believe the attitude that has been shown by someone I once respected.
Meh, I still respect them. We are all human. I’m sure I act less than stellar sometimes. It’s just a glimpse into real life instead of posting on a board. We should be understanding. Though, I wish I didn’t have that glimpse!

Also, businesses like this have a huge problem with people loaning out their membership cards to others, in order to get two memberships for the price of one Or more, even.
Scammers find a way to cheat. **Your photo ID prevents you from paying higher rates for someone else’s theft.
**
At Lent approaches, maybe a better way is to offer low-wage workers a word of complement, kindness, or a smile. I remember working retail, People are just horrible when they know they can blow you off and get away with it. What’s that saying: the customer is always right? Frequently they are wrong. The employees often take the brunt of it.

This is nothing to make an issue over.
This has taken a nasty turn.
Prayers offered for both involved.
Enough already.
This person is paying per visit–the visits have been paid for–if someone else was to use the punch card the business is not out any money. It has been pointed out that if that is really the concern–they could request that anyone they think is cheating–show a photo id–like the drivers license we already carry–but really it would only need to apply to those purchasing a membership that allowed them unlimited access for a period of time–you really can’t steal from them, in the way you suggest, if you’re paying per visit.

It seems the situation has been greatly exaggerated by all involved–I mean I get the feeling the receptionist is being beaten by a scrooge like boss for failing to get all the photo id’s before the next terrorist attack, that the ultimatum has come down from on high–get that photo id or you’re out of here. As one who has worked these type of jobs and who now employs people, and has children that work in them–I doubt anything so dramatic is going on–I’d guess it’s all a lot more low key than reading this thread would lead one to believe. I also get the feeling the OP is going in daily and berating this lowly receptionist, is just simply picking on and terrorizing her–but yet I read the OP is simply saying–“Oh, I forgot about that picture thing. How about next time?” In my time working these type of lower wage jobs–this would have been pretty low on the list, if even on the list, of things that bothered me. I’m guessing this would be low on the list of things that would bother our current front office staff. We’ve had a couple of clients that we’ve had to let go because they were actually verbally abusive to our staff–and our staff lets us know when clients get out of line–nothing like what’s been described on this thread comes up.

It seems all involved have blown this up into way more than it is.

The peace of Christ,
Mark

This has to be the most bizarre threads I’ve read in a long long time - and about something so trivial. I don’t know why I kept reading - it’s clear that the OP is proud of her behavior, and it is equally clear that nothing anyone says is going to make a bit of difference.

I agree. At least on this thread, OP seems to feel that she’s smarter than the receptionist (“haven’t worked a low end job since I was in HS and got my education”) and she is being passive aggressive thinking the receptionist doesn’t see through it when in fact, she probably does.

Yes. By the OP

I know, right???

Yep. Pretty much. :sad_yes:

Is questioning rules and authority really that controversial these days? As long as you aren’t being rude I don’t think you are being unreasonable, receptionists deal with much worse behaviour than this and she can always refer to the manager if it’s really a problem.

I always try to avoid giving more personal information than necessary myself and I think an ID card would be sufficient in this situation.

My mom’s gym actually checks sex offender registries to keep the building safe.
Yeah, lots of gyms have issues with creepy guys lurking around to stare at women in spandex under the pretense of working out. I can see the value in having a database to match names with faces.

Bye, clare.

I thought we were friends. Virtual friends, to be sure, but friends nonetheless.

Please do not send me any more PMs.

:bighanky:
This is bizzare.
I mean this with all sincerity. Are you ok? Is there something wrong?

Couldn’t the OP just say that, though, instead of beating around the bush?

I’ve dealt with terrible behavior from customers and clients, but being deflected, even if not as rude as being yelled at or called names, still annoyed me (plus it made more work behind the scenes!) Based on the facts here, I probably would say the next time, “Hey, is this something my supervisor could help you with?” if this had occurred at one of my prior jobs.

But the OP could be gracious and just do that herself.

Wow. I don’t recall sending you any.

Just because I didn’t take your side in this war against this girl.

Wow. 🤷
