Jesus said to St. Gertrude: “He who takes care to eat and drink; etc.; with the intention expressed in the following prayer; holds as it were a buckler before Me; to defend Me from the insults and injuries of the worldly.”

O Lord Jesus, I take this food in that same love wherewith Thou hast sanctified it, when in Thy most holy Humanity Thou didst deign to eat and to drink to the glory of God the Father, and for the salvation of all the whole human race; beseeching Thee that, in union with Thy Divine love, it may tend to the increase of glory, and salvation of all Thine elect in Heaven, on earth, or in Purgatory.

I say something like this. A bit shorter.

After eating, I generally just say thank you in some way.

Thank you, littlesouls. 🙂

Is that prayer you quoted a popular prayer among people you know too? Or do they tend to use a different prayers?

What prayers do you say before and after meals?
May the poor eat and be satisfied, may they who seek the Lord praise Him, and may their hearts live forever.O Christ God, bless the food and drink of Your servants, for You are holy, always now and ever, and forever. Amen.

Well, these ones sound familiar. 😉

Do you do it without the “Glory be…” and “Lord, have mercy?”

Before meals, my friends and family generally say “Bless us, O Lord, and these gifts…”

After meals, I’m not sure.

Before meals, I say: Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

After meals I say: We give Thee thanks, almighty God, for all Thy benefits, Who livest and reignest, world without end. Amen. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
