What exactly is the origin and derivation of the word “Mass,” as in “the Mass,” “liturgy of the Mass”, and “sacrifice of the Mass”?
I have heard it comes from the latin “missa” which bascially means “dismissal”. Is this true? How is the usage related to the current Catholic “Mass”?

yep from “ite missa est” (hope I spelled that right - as a soon to be ex protestant - my only reason for knowing this is music history courses - I guess I should be thankful I have a little more knowledge of the mass due to having been a music major! imagine how ignorant a Protestant I would be otherwise!)

The dismissal “Ite, missa est” means “Go, you are sent.” I find it funny that the rite developed to place this “dismissal” before the blessing and Last Gospel, which we were of course expected to “stick around” for after we were sent forth.

Ah, that’s nothing. In the Eastern tradition the deacon will go out and proclaim: “Let us complete our prayer to the Lord!” – and that means there’s at least 15 minutes to go!

At least it’s a universal feature. One more commonality between East and West.
