I’ve always wondered this. In Catholic school I learned that the Communion of Saints consists of three different groups:

The Church Triumphant–the saints in Heaven, who have finished the race and have received the laurel.
The Church Suffering–the saints in Purgatory undergoing purification who have won their place in Heaven but just need a little soap-and-water before they are allowed in.
The Church Militant–the saints on Earth, courageously battling temptation and sin as their earn their way into Heaven.

Does All Saints Day honor all three groups of saints? Or is it specifically for the big-S saints–those who have entered Heaven? Is All Saints Day like a big family reunion of all three groups of saints?

I know that All Souls is specifically for the saints in purgatory.

I believe it is intended for The Church Triumphant while All Souls Day (which is tomorrow) is intended for The Church Suffering.

And even more technically, it’s for the Saints who arent officially canonized by the church.

We have those that are raised to the alter in a specific sense, but then there are those saints who arent and dont have their “own feast day”

This is their feast day.

We are talking the Church triumphant here.

We here on earth are the Church Militant…(ie not saints so to speak)

Church Suffering=those in Purgatory
Church Triumphant=those who have the Beautific Vision
Church Militant= Church here on earth

All Saints Day is the feast say for those Church Triumphant who dont have their own feast day (Ie not made an Official canonical saint raised to the alter)
