Is it true that God only permitted Noah and future generations to eat meat after the deluge?

Haydock Commentary(haydock1859.tripod.com/index.html):
Ver. 29. Every herb, &c. As God does not here express leave to eat flesh-meat, which he did after the deluge, it is supposed that the more religious part of mankind, at least, abstained from it, and from wine, till after that event, when they became more necessary to support decayed nature. (Haydock) (Menochius) — In the golden age, spontaneous fruits were the food of happy mortals. (Calmet)
How can this be reconciled with the fact that the human body is designed (through evolution) to eat meat aswell as plant matter ?

Is the commentary wrong, what is the Church’s position?

If you read right before that verse in Gen. 1:28, it says:
God blessed them, saying: "Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that move on the earth."

**Also, **Genesis 4:3-4 clearly states:
***In the course of time Cain brought an offering to the LORD from the fruit of the soil, **while Abel, for his part, brought one of the best firstlings of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, *but on Cain and his offering he did not. Cain greatly resented this and was crestfallen.

Now - why would Abel have had a flock if not to eat?
Were they just “pets”?

And the sacrifice was a burned offering.
A Barbeque that “smelt good to the lord”. I love BBQ’s as well, but its weird that God would like a nice roast chicken. What does he do, come down and eat it? Cain was left in no doubt that Yaweh/Jesus diddnt like Vegitarians.

I have heard this before. And as far as I know there are many theologians who thought that early man were vegeterians up until the time of Noah. God never told early mankind to eat meat until the time of Noah.

Genesis 9:3-4
"3 Every creature that is alive shall be yours to eat; I give them all to you as I did the green plants.
4 Only flesh with its lifeblood still in it you shall not eat.

This is when God told Noah to eat meat. But he never said this until this time. This is right after the flood has ended, and Noah and his family are now back living on the land.

They were using the flock for wool, for clothing, blankets, tents and other articles. Possibly for milk too.
well I’m just a city boy BUT
my understanding is that you keep some sheep and goats for wool
but if you want milk you need for the ewe to give birth regularly and then remove the pesky lamb that also wants the milk

(any farm boys out there to help me out?)

lamb chops anyone?

humans are omnivors. It is the way God evolved us.

How is this reconclied with evolution which contends that humans had evolved to eat meat?

The literal interpreation of the story of the flood is false. There has not been a worldwide flood in the last 4,000 years or so. There is no genetic bottleneck in the human genome or in almost any other animal genome*] that would result from such a drastic population reduction in the last 4,000 years. There is no evidence for the super-rapid evolution that creationists need to get from the limited number of species on the Ark to the huge number of species we see today.

There is no evidence of a worldwide folld on the Biblical timescale. There is no evidence of a worldwide flood in the time since Homo sapiens evolved. If there was such a flood, then it happened before we evolved.

*] Elephant seals had a genetic bottleneck in the 19th century. A species of hamster had a genetic bottleneck in the last few hundred years. Cheetahs had a genetic bottleneck 10,000 years ago. If there were flood related bottlenecks in most other animals we would have detected them.
