Whatever you observe today, it’s during the Christmas season…my understanding was we’re exempt from the obligation to abstain or do something else during the Christmas and Easter seasons.

I’m not aware of that teaching. Where is it to be found? I thought it was penance on Fridays unless a solemnity falls on a Friday: then there’s no penance. I know of no teaching that Fridays aren’t penitential during the Easter and Christmas seasons.

Yes, that’s correct. Nevertheless, that’s the first eight days of Easter rather than the entire season. Also, that doesn’t deal with Christmas.
