How do you and your family handle meat on Fridays (all year long)? Just curious what people are doing.

We’re kind of in a state of flux over this so I didn’t respond to the poll. We haven’t really abstained from meat on Fridays except during Lent, but we’ve been talking about doing it throughout the rest of the year. I’ve started fasting on Fridays, which I’ll continue after Lent, so even if we still have meat, I’ll be doing some sort of penance. Our intention, though, is to take on meatless Fridays. I just need to get my wife fully on board, since she’s the one usually making dinner.

I voted that we abstain from meat on Fridays throughout the year. We do so because it is easy to remember and not really all that hard to do. It’s not because we are more virtuous but rather because it is the simplest way for us to do our Friday penance, which is only encouraged and not under pain of sin (a decision I don’t agree with and since it is a disciplinary matter I am free to disagree with this decision by our bishops 😉 ). I have to say that once we made the decision to be meatless on Fridays doing it became routine. We no longer consider it difficult to do although it is deprivation just the same. 🙂

Ah, interesting! Thank you.

My sister and I do not eat meat on Fridays. I have a medical condition that is affected by the amount of protein in my diet. So I have to mindful of what I eat on Wednesday and Thursday (make sure I take some meat) and then careful on Friday (I take no sugar on that day). Even with that issue, it’s become second nature and it’s not that difficult. It has been a huge blessing, however. It helps us be mindful of Christ’s sacrifice and prepares us for confession and mass. And no, we are not super holy or anything! 😃 😛

When I discovered the “no meat on friday” tradition I incorporated it into my regular diet plan and I liked it. So now i try to abstain from meat on Fridays aswell as Tuesdays for health reasons 👍

Here in the UK,Catholics abstain from meat all Fridays. I am use to it. It is still quite traditional to have fish and chips on a Friday night here. There are long queues at the local fish and chip shop. Even at my sons school they have fish every friday. From all the way from nursery to his high school, he has always been served fish. None of them have been Catholic schools.

I can’t answer the poll because all the responses begin with “we.”

I observe Friday meat abstinence year round and have done so since I started eating solid food (according to Mom, anyway), even when I was fallen away from the Church. Old habits die hard.

The Husband does not abstain, ever (not even during Lent), nor does he do any other penance. He is not Catholic.

Currently, this is easily workable because (1) we don’t have children, and (2) I’m rarely home at dinnertime on Fridays. He is responsible for feeding himself on that evening. When I ***am ***home, we do eat together but his meal will have meat and mine won’t. This is usually achieved by having common side dishes but different proteins. For example, we’ll both have mashed potatoes and broccoli but he’ll add a small steak while I’ll opt for a salmon filet. It means an extra frying pan to wash but in the grand scheme of things that’s no big deal. 👍

God bless!

My wife and I abstain every Friday, because it’s easy to remember and it ties us to immemorial custom. Since we are allowed to do an alternative penance, however, we will maybe once or twice a year when it’s impractical or rude to a host to abstain.

I abstain from meat on all Fridays throughout the year. I offer it up for all the aborted babies in the world.

We often have work lunches on Fridays, most of the places around here have fried fish, and I have dietary restrictions (no gluten), so it’s just inconvenient. Maybe we’ll try keeping it this year. For my wife, it’s not an issue - she’s vegetarian. And my kids refuse to eat meat because that’s what you do when you’re young.

My situation as well; it’s not “we” but “me” as I live alone.

I admit; I don’t abstain. I often eat “on the road” and don’t always have a lot of choice when or what to eat.

I do, however, abstain on Fridays during Lent no matter what.
