Meat on Fridays is the traditional Friday Penance and is still the prefered Friday penance.

If the last post did not clear it up here goes;Friday’s during Lent no meat is eaten, no chicken, beef, pork etc. You may eat fish of any kind or of course their is macaroni and cheese. This is for each meal on friday’s.

This is an article about Catholic “tradition” with a small “T”
Meatless Fridays are Catholic tradition with a small “T” Worth checking out.

We have always been encouraged to fast and abstain on Fridays but only during Lent is it an obligation to observe the Lenten regulations.

This is also from a link that you can read more about penitential practices which include fasting & abstaining on Fridays taken from the US Catholic Conference of Bishops
usccb.org/dpp/penitential.htm
Penitential Days
  • Ash Wednesday—This day marks the beginning of the Lenten season. The imposition of ashes is an ancient penitential practice symbolizing our dependence upon God’s mercy and forgiveness. Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence in the Church.
  • Good Friday—Christ suffered and died for our salvation on Friday. On the Friday that we call “Good,” the Church gathers to commemorate Jesus’ Passion and death. Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence. The Good Friday fast is the Paschal fast—a fast of anticipation and longing for the Passover of the Lord, which should continue, when possible, through Holy Saturday.
  • Fridays During Lent—In the United States, the tradition of abstaining from meat on each Friday during Lent is maintained.
  • Fridays Throughout the Year—In memory of Christ’s suffering and death, the Church prescribes making each Friday throughout the year a penitential day. All of us are urged to prepare appropriately for that weekly Easter that comes with each Sunday.

I know meat is not eaten on Fridays during Lent.

I also had the understanding that on “regular non-Lent” Fridays, meat is optional. However, if you eat meat, you should give up something else that day as your penance. Like if after you’re dinner you usually eat a piece of cake. Then, on that Friday, you wouldn’t eat the cake if you ate meat that day.

Is that correct?

That is absolutely correct! But unfortunately many catholics are not aware of that. I believe some of us must have been “absent” the Sunday they gave that explanation.
