Meat: What you don't know can kill you

If you want to waste time lobbying for better meat, that is your choice (and I don’t know why you would as a vegetarian). As for me, I’m going to cook my meat right.
My wife learned this a long time ago.

When we grill, we use a meat thermometer. Once the meat reaches the minimum temp for the prescribed time, we pull it off.

Never had a steak hurt us, and they are always juicy.

Waste of time?

Just because as vegetarians/vegans we don’t eat meat doesn’t mean we are ok with children dieing because they did…that would be like saying… hey I never get in a plane so who cares if they keep them safe…

The issue with this is something we should all care about and not have a knee jerk reaction to…

If it has been demonstrated that the change in the way cattle are raised for food has increased the instance of e-coli then we should all care - perhaps especially those who still eat beef - I can appreciate that some disagree with this assertion, but why not consider the possibility? Why not advocate for changes that would reduce the instance? Certainly advocate for better preparation - no one is arguing that that shouldn’t also be a factor - but IF it possible that the contamination can be reduced or eliminated by better practices in 1) how the cows are raised 2) how the meat is processed why would anyone not be for this?? Why wouldn’t those who still eat beef not also be willing to ‘waste’ time advocating for this??

As vegans and vegetarians (and other omnivores Catholics on this tread) we would also like to see the cows treated better for their own lives - per the Catechism:
2416 Animals are God’s creatures. He surrounds them with his providential care. By their mere existence they bless him and give him glory.196 Thus men owe them kindness. We should recall the gentleness with which saints like St. Francis of Assisi or St. Philip Neri treated animals.

What I understand of this - the big issue of ground beef - often ground at the facilities in large quantities - so each ground surface is an ‘outside’ surface much more likely to have been contaminated - so that is why ground beef poses a much higher risk than a roast or steak.

There is nothing traditional about it.
But we have to ask ourselves who precisely is responsible for the tainted beef hitting the plate.

Once the actual responsibility is known, then we can define what exactly needs to be done.
When we are putting children at risk - we must be willing to both advocate for better processing (how cows are raised, how meat is processed) AND how food is prepared. Honestly, I can not understand why there is such a negative reaction from some about trying to do EVERYTHING that can be done to try to remedy this situation.

Right.
But whether it is a steak or a bunch of hamburgers, if they are prepared properly then there is no problem.

This is one of those occasions when doing ‘EVERYTHING’ is not necessarily the best thing.

The simple fact of the matter is that a properly cooked hanburger is not a danger to anyone. Why should we raise the price of doing business when it really comes down to enforcing standards that are already in place in the kitchen?

What needs to be done is already written down and enforced.
If some cook does not follow the procedure and ends up killing people as a result, it is a tragedy. But it is not cause to burden all other parts of the business for the cook’s negligence.

It is dangerous for me to drive with flat tires on my car. I know it, and the car manual already tells me this, and in some states the goverment inspector will stop me. Should we burden car manufacturers to engineer around my own stupidity should I choose to run with low air in my tires?

The horrid fact we must face is that people will be stupid.
So how much burden are we willing to go through to prevent people from being stupid?
How much control of our own lives are we willing to give up to prevent our own stupid decisions?

I don’t eat meat, but my husband does and so do my kids (not often, and I don’t cook for them–they are known to go to the fast food joints with their friends–much to my chagrin). So bigfootbob, you are saying that I should only care about myself, and that I am safe because I don’t eat meat, why waste my time caring about the topic??? Did you see the Larry King Show on the topic?? Can you comfortably turn your back on the parents of these children that died??? So you are not a woman, not capable of getting pregnant or having an abortion. Is that a topic too that you can brush aside because it doesn’t affect you???

***No one’s child should die ***because of tainted meat–and you can’t control all the cooks and their skill or lack of skill, but you can do something about the E.coli in the processing plant.

I have lots of friends and family that eat meat, and I hope that another mother will never experience losing a child this way. One child’s life is worth more than all the hamburger in the world.

You claim we cannot control all of the cooks, but believe we can control all of the minimum wage employees in a meat processing plant?

This is not logical.

I care about it, but it is something that would be extremely hard to change. I would rather spend my time lobbying for a** better cause **such as pro-life etc. I won’t have a problem if my food is cooked right.
So if the task seems too mountainous, don’t even try.

Pro-life is a better cause than saving children from dying from tainted meat. Now that makes sense. Unborn children’s lives have priority over living, already-born children. Shouldn’t we care about ALL children??? And make this world a safe place for ALL???

Maybe you just hit the nail on the head. Minimum wage employees. We are putting our safety in the hands of minimum wage employees handling a potentially dangerous product.

So how much would you propose we pay our cooks?

Well here is a trick I learned from my dad ( a butcher). Have your butcher grind your beef for you! Pick out some nice cuts…sirloin is nice and lean. and get it freshly ground as you wait. Most places where I buy meat offer ground beef that is ground on site and not purchased ground.

If you cannot find a butcher to do it, do it for yourself. The food processor (read the manual) is a good substitute for a meat grinder.

True, but I am saying there is not much you can do about it without devoting your life/resources to that cause. If you want to do that -good for you, but there are more important causes, I think.

How many kids have died from tainted meat? 50,000,000 have died from abortion. I think I can do a lot more good there. yes I care about tainted meat deaths, but there is a lot more abortions

People catch salmonella and E.coli from contaminated vegetables, too. This argument against eating meat does not hold any water.

Peace,
Dante

**What’s more important than a child’s life? **Ask the parents in the video whose children died, what cause is more important than their child’s life.

What cause would you offer your child’s life up for???

Vegetables contaminated from water contaminated from the waste from factory farms and CAFO’s!!!

Are you saying bigfootbob doesn’t care about children or everyone that disagrees with you doesn’t care about children?
