This is interesting. I don’t know what the local bishops decided to do in Canada. In the US, there appears to be no obligatory penance - although as a new “Catholic in training” (I’m still Protestant but starting RCIA), I’ve just started voluntarily refraining from meat on Fridays as a means of honoring and focusing on Christ’s sacrifice each Friday.
I believe the current Cannon reads:
Canon 1251
Abstinence from meat, or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference, is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
the “or from some other food as determined by the Episcopal Conference” has been interpreted broadly, apparently, to not require abstinence from any food (in lieu of meat) on Fridays.
Happy to learn from others in this post if I’ve misunderstood this.
Blessings,
Brian
